Paolo Di Canio tasted defeat for the second time as Sunderland manager as his side were absolutely abject in defeat against Aston Villa. Things will have to get better than this if we're hopeful to avoid relegation. Here's our report on events from Villa Park.

Very early doors it looked like the home side were going to take the game to us and came out the blocks with a spell of pressure for all of two minutes. In which some great defending from both Phil Bardsley coming across to cover and Danny Rose both managed to quell what attack they could put together. In the teeming rain Simon Mignolet looked less than convincing on an early corner, but managed to do just enough to see the ball safe.

From then on during the opening ten minutes it was all Sunderland. Danny Graham saw a shot charged down well in close quarters, before a chip over the top from Adam Johnson saw Craig Gardner beat Brad Guzan to the ball but couldn't force the ball into the net with Joe Bennett covering on the line.

Things then got quiet. Perhaps a little too quiet as the rest of the half would go on to prove.

Gabriel Agbonlahor hit the ignition of the game with a neat little one-two with Christian Benteke to break through the Sunderland defence and bear down on Mignolet. The former England striker (no, really) however could only slice the ball an inch the wrong side of the post, but the warning signs were there. Having allowed Villa to play the ball around at will in front of us for ten minutes or so, eventually something was going to come.

That happened on the half hour when Ron Vlaar opened the scoring with his first goal for the club. Having seen a string of shots blocked in great fashion the Dutch defender felt he'd show everyone how it was done and picked the ball up just inside the Sunderland half. A couple of steps later he unleashed a thunderbolt of a shot which through a sea of bodies and on a skidding surface gave Mignolet no chance as it nestled in the bottom corner. A very nice strike.

The joy however was short-lived.

"Broadway" Danny Rose had ideas of his own, and he more than lived up to that billing when he got himself forward and played a one-two with Danny Graham. Rose continued his run into the area and finished first time, left-footed beyond a helpless Guzan to level things up just one minute after conceding the lead.

Finally on level pegging. Vlaar's striker was decent, but Villa hadn't looked convincing or dominant to be on top of things. They did retake the lead though and it was some "classic" Sunderland defending which allowed it.

Remember when a simple ball over the top would absolutely kill us on account of Phil Bardsley forgetting he's a defender? Halcyon days. Anyway, this is what happened again. When the ball was picked up on the left every man and their dog could see the dangerous Andreas Weimann in acres of space. He was found and dispatched clinically past Mignolet with ten minutes left of the half. A killer blow having gotten ourselves back into contention.

A couple of half-chances came by way of a long distance drive by Alfred N'Diaye which had Guzan scrambling, and another from Johnson which didn't.

The ball was in the net on the cusp of half-time when Gardner slid in to finish however Lee Probert had already whistled for a foul on Guzan by Danny Graham.

A re-think was required by Paolo Di Canio who had his first teamtalk to give to his Sunderland players when down at the halfway point.

Whatever he did do to try and turn things around in the second half didn't seem very apparent in the opening throws of the second half. Barring a nice move between N'Diaye and Sessegnon there was little to write home about. The passing was incredibly sloppy and it was little surprise when after nine minutes of the half we were made to pay.

Agbonlahor fired in a rasper from about 25-yards which clipped the back of Bardsley and had Mignolet scrambling to stop it. He managed, but could only beat it away as far as a unmarked Benteke who stooped in to score and give the hosts a valuable lead.

Five minutes later the game was put very much beyond doubt when Benteke grabbed his second and Villa's fourth.

Bardsley gave away a corner under little to no pressure, form which Westwood crossed and Benteke had a simple header from a standing jump to rise highest and nod down into an unguarded bottom corner.

Between this we had one nice bit of play from Adam Johnson and one incredibly poor. A cross was an inch away from N'Diaye connecting with it on the slide and also a whisker away from creeping in the bottom corner. We also saw the worst when a chance to shoot from the edge of the area ended up in the top corner of the stand as opposed to the net.

Di Canio rung his first change in the wake of the the fourth goal bringing on James McClean for an ineffectual Seb Larsson. Not that many in red and white were looking particularly effectual.

It could quite easily however have been five with little over an hour on the clock. Benteke again causing problems as he lashed one across goal from the back post which landed at the feet of Weimann. The Austrian struck twice but found Mignolet and Cuellar on the line able to spare our blushes further.

A disastrous night had a cap put on it when Stephane Sessegnon was sent off. Chasing down a 50-50 ball with Yacuba Sylla the striker was second to it and certainly caught Sylla but it certainly wasn't bad enough to warrant a red card in my book. The club might want to revisit this one in the morning as there could be a case for appeal.

Not that it should matter too much when Benteke completed his hattrick.

Carlos Cuellar attempted to bring the ball out of defence and failed abjectly. The ball came nicely for Benteke who finished neatly past Mignolet at the front post. Mignolet hardly covered himself in glory either allowing the his fellow Belgian to get the ball in from such a tight angle.

As we saw out the final twenty minutes Villa went into complete cruise control, ole-ing each completed pass and the fans even finding time to taunt Di Canio plenty. At this stage in the game if Sunderland had been a horse they wouldn't have just been punched, but punched to death and melted down into glue about fifteen minutes earlier.

Weimann had Mignolet worried yet again with five minutes of misery left to go, while for us there was a sense of mild intrigue as Mickael Mandron came on in relief of Danny Graham who looked to still be suffering the effects of Sunday night. Ahem. David Vaughan also came on for no apparent reason.

Oh right yes, that's why he came on. To play an awful back pass straight to Agbonlahor who rounded Mignolet and finished with ease. Well, if we're going to concede six at least we scored one. The ever so smallest of silver linings on a very grey cloud.

Mandron contributed an almost Benteke-esque header on goal towards the end but it would have counted for nothing.

The home side didn't so much dominate things, but certainly made our less than average play look even worse by controlling the ball well, using the weather to their advantage and generally playing us off the park.

Di Canio called this beforehand "like a Champions League final" for us. Well, if that's the case I'm glad we're one of those teams which only ever gets to watch such competition on TV because things would be even more embarrassing and awful in the real thing.

Paolo's had a big wake up call now, and if a win tonight was essential, it's absolutely monumental next week against Stoke City at home, because that goal difference isn't looking to clever any more.

The teamsheets are in for tonight's crunch clash against Aston Villa at Villa Park. A win should see Sunderland virtually safe from relegation but Villa need every point they can get at the moment...

Paolo Di Canio had made two changes to the side that beat Everton 1-0, bringing Phil Bardsley and Craig Gardner back into the fold after their respective absences. Gardner returns in the middle of the pitch, partnering Alfred N'Diaye, with Seb Larsson starting on the left hand side. Jack Colback and James McClean drop to the bench.

Sunderland (4-4-2): Simon Mignolet; Phil Bardsley, John O'Shea (C), Carlos Cuellar, Danny Rose; Adam Johnson, Alfred N'Diaye, Craig Gardner, Seb Larsson; Stephane Sessenon, Danny Graham

Substitutes: Keiren Westwood, Matt Kilgallon, Kader Mangane, David Vaughan, Jack Colback, James McClean, Mikael Mandron.

Meanwhile Paul Lambert has made just one change from the side that lost at Old Trafford last Monday, with part-time Seaham Hall Hotel resident Charles N'Zogbia dropping to the bench to be replaced by Frechman Yacouba Sylla.

N'Zogbia is joined on the subs bench by Darren Bent, who regrets nothing.

Aston Villa (4-2-3-1): Brad Guzan; Matthew Lowton, Nathan Baker , Ron Vlaar (C), Joe Bennett; Ashley Westwood, Fabian Delph; Yacouba Sylla, Andreas Weimann, Gabriel Agbonlahor; Christian Benteke

Substitutes: Shay Given, Eric Lichaj, Brett Holman, Charles N'Zogbia, Darren Bent, Jordan Bowery, Barry Bannan

Paolo Di Canio takes his men to Villa Park tonight hoping to score his third victory in a row and just about put the seal on Premier League survival for the season.

Sunderland Team News

Craig Gardner returns from suspension as Sunderland travel to one of his former clubs. He is joined by Phil Bardsley in being available for the game after overcoming injury, but the match comes too soon for Connor Wickham.

With Gardner's return to the starting line-up likely to come in midfield, Jack Colback could again be asked to fill in at right-back, with Seb Larsson reverting to the left-hand side of midfield, where he started in Paolo Di Canio's first match in charge against Chelsea.

Aston Villa Team News

Gabriel Agbonlahor completed 90 minutes in Villa's 3-0 defeat to Manchester United, leaving Paul Lambert with only long-term injury issues.

Given the importance of this fixture, Villa look set to be unchanged, with Agbonlahor, Andreas Weimann and Charles N'Zogbia all supporting lone front man Christian Benteke.

Predicted Lineups

Sunderland: Mignolet; Colback, O'Shea, Cuellar, Rose; Johnson, Gardner, N'Diaye, Larsson; Sessegnon; Graham

Aston Villa: Guzan; Lowton, Clark, Vlaar, Bennett; Westwood, Delph; N'Zogbia, Weimann, Agbonlahor; Benteke

Key Matchup: Adam Johnson Vs Joe Bennett

A clash of two Middlesbrough academy products, Bennett was actively targeted by Manchester United last Monday. His positioning has seemed suspect throughout the season, and with Johnson edging towards his best form of the season - in addition to Sunderland favouring attacking down the right flank in recent games - Bennett will be in for another busy evening.

Recent Form: WLWDL

Win: Aston Villa 3-2 Queens Park Rangers (Agbonlahor 45+3, Weimann 59, Benteke 81; Jenas 23, Townsend 73)

Loss: Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool (Benteke 31; Henderson 47, Gerrard pen 60)

Win: Stoke City 1-3 Aston Villa (Kightly 80; Agbonlahor 9, Lowton 87, Benteke 90+1)

Draw: Aston Villa 1-1 Fulham (N'Zogbia 55; Delph og 66)

Loss: Manchester United 3-0 Aston Villa (Van Persie 2, 13, 33)

Last Time Around: Aston Villa 0-0 Sunderland, 21/04/12

Little to write home about on our last visit to Villa Park; Nicklas Bendtner had a second half effort ruled out for offside, and Craig Gardner was sent off for a second bookable offence late on. By and large, the Black Cats were on their holidays having secured their Premier League survival.

The Ref: Mike Dean

This will be just the second time Dean has refereed a Sunderland game this season, the other also against a Midlands club - the 4-2 defeat at home to West Bromwich Albion.

The Wirral whistler oversaw an equal record of Sunderland games last season (one win, one draw, one loss), which included the Tyne-Wear derby in which both Stephane Sessegnon and Lee Cattermole were sent off.

What The Managers Said

Paolo Di Canio:

If we win this game we will stay up and we will try and win the game, not mathematical but with 40 points you should stay up.

It's obvious we do have one eye on the future but in this moment I don't want to lose any sort of energy because I know that football can change quickly.

As I've said my many times my mentality is to keep going and to maintain the same focus because if you want to change the habit or mentality we have to deliver it by the fact, by the example.

There is real focus in my players and in my team.

Paul Lambert:

We've got to win it. Sunderland are going well themselves but it is an opportunity for us.

We are getting better and I still think so many things will happen between now and the end of the season in that little group of teams at the bottom of the table.

We have got a massive game on Monday night and we have to try and win that.

Roker Report Predicts

A slender away win, given the form of Benteke and Agbonlahor. At the other end of the pitch, Villa are doing themselves no favours - without a clean sheet in 2013 and two own goals in the last six games. By contrast, Di Canio has Sunderland organised, motivated and confidence is quickly returning. We'll say a 2-1 win.

Another week another series of winning bets for Luke as he further extends his lead at the top of the table having backed Sessegnon to score anytime against Everton and an Athletico Madrid victory, nicely played young man. Elsewhere Craig managed a tidy return with his Bayern Munich/Napoli double and believe it or not even head-honcho Simon Walsh managed to put some positive numbers onto the board this week!

We've just the Aston Villa vs Sunderland game to look over this week given the Monday night slot we've been allocated but there is still plenty to play for!

Simon Walsh

A winner last week at last in which I told you all we'd beat Everton by a non-specific score. Go me! Anyway, on to some picks for tonight's game against Villa. In this game I'm expecting us to get something if not a win, so that market looks too difficult to predict. I'm more confident it will be low-scoring so I'm going to lump on Under 2.5 goals. 66% of our games with Villa have seen this ring true...

Aston Villa Vs Sunderland Under 2.5 Goals - 4/5 - £20 Stake

Craig Clark

Since Di Canio took over, Sessegnon has been an absolute revelation. He's been the attacking inspiration behind the consecutive victories over the Mags and Everton. With Villa being far from convincing at the back, I've no doubt we'll be looking for Sess to exploit any weakness and I'm hoping another goal will put us on route to a crucial 3 points.

Sessegnon to score anytime, Sunderland to win - 5/1 - £5 stake

David Boyle

I'm going to keep things nice and simple this week and back a Sunderland win. Lambert has only served to ramp up the pressure on his young side going into this game in my opinion and this can only play into Di Canio's hands. Yes, I know backing Sunderland to win a remarkable three games on the spin is pretty bloody mental as a Sunderland fan but I really think we can just about nick this one, plus the odds are VERY generous in my opinion!

Sunderland to beat Aston Villa - 12/5 - £5 Stake

Luke Bowley

Sunderland look to continue their excellent form under Di Canio tonight, and facing an Aston Villa side who've been leaking goals all season, you'd certainly fancy them to do that. However, Villa will also post a real attacking threat, particularly through Christian Benteke. Sunderland's defence has often struggled with strong, powerful striker this season, and he's backed up a very talented, creative midfield. Villa should trouble Sunderland's defence more than Everton and Newcastle, so I'm going for both teams to score in this one.

Aston Villa Vs Sunderland: Both teams to score - 4/5 - £10

Karl Jones

Since Paolo Di Canio has entered Sunderland, a group of players who seemed limp and lacklustre have straightened themselves up, and taken control of situation that had been their own doing to some extent. There is energy, confidence and a lot more detail being passed onto them from the sidelines - as a result I quite fancy Sunderland to extend their winning run to three games.

This week we are joined by Robert Lintott from the Villa blog here on SBN, 7500 to Holte, for all the Villa perspective ahead of Monday's all important clash at the bottom of the table

As the pressure really, really begins to mount in the battle for Premier League survival, Paul Lambert has already targeted Monday's clash between our two sides as "must win" and is optimistic of taking all three points - do you share your manager's confidence?

Robert Lintott: It's hard to be confident of taking three points when the club has only done so eight times in thirty-four tries this season. That said, Aston Villa have looked significantly better in the past few weeks than they did at the beginning of the season. Yes, they just got trounced by Manchester United, but drawing conclusions from that would be a bit like saying that the new family car is really rugged, but we're worried that it may not hold up given its experience with the atom bomb.

So I'd not say confident of three points, but I do think it's a distinct possibility. I am confident of the side getting something from the match, though.

Despite an obviously difficult season there have been a some performances of note; firstly Brad Guzan who was "released" in the summer before going on to win back a place in the side and impress with a string of good performances this term - what have you made of Guzan's turnaround in fortunes?

RL: I think that a lot of people who closely follow Villa and the USMNT aren't actually all that surprised in Guzan's ability. He's always been a solid keeper, though we generally only got the chance to see that in cup play. As great as the Christian Benteke signing was, re-signing Guzan may have been Lambert's smartest move of the year. He's got great reaction time and seems to command the box better than Shay Given ever did. Plus it's nice to continue the tradition of a bald American Brad in goal for Villa.

The other Villain who will provide the American shot stopper with competition for player of the year will undoubtedly by Christian Benteke who has looked fantastic over the course of the season. Just how good is the Belgian now you've seen more of him?

RL: He's significantly better than his transfer fee, that's for sure. One of the most obnoxious story lines of the early season was Belgian experts who kept saying that Benteke was overrated and would never amount to anything. And yes, he does have matches where he disappears. But overall he's been a commanding presence on the attack who combines the sheer physicality of an Emile Heskey with creativity. It's amazing to know that, should Villa's best striker get the ball in a less-than-optimal position, he will be able to do something with it. Which reminds me of...

What does the future hold for Darren Bent?

RL: Assuming the club doesn't lose Benteke over the summer (an assumption I feel more and more confident about), I hope they find some way to drop Bent. It's not that he's not a good player, it's that he's a bad player for Villa's system. The club has never had many particularly great creative people to get the ball to Bent where he can score. The half-season we saw with a decent Marc Albrighton and a better-than-he'll-ever-be-again Stewart Downing showed that Bent can score at will so long as people put him in position to do so. Without that help though, he's pretty much useless.

Moving on to Sunderland, what did you make of Martin O'Neill's stint at Sunderland; the wretched run of form he was unable to address, absences from the training ground and subsequent sacking?

RL: Ugh. I'm so tempted to just say, "That's MON for you!" but that seems like the lazy way out. From what I can tell of MON he can be a very effective manager if all the pieces fall precisely into place, and is totally lost if they don't. At Sunderland, as with his last months at Villa, it seems like the pieces weren't there that he wanted and so he was at a loss. Seems like a very one-dimensional manager.

On to Monday's game; are there any weak areas of this Sunderland side that you believe Lambert's Villa could look to exploit?

RL: Well, the current Sunderland isn't exactly a scoring machine, so if Villa can hold down the fort and score a goal or two, I think they'll get the points they need so badly. That said...

Vice-versa, what weak areas of the Villa setup do you believe Di Canio's men could exploit?

RL: Villa have the same problem, to a larger degree. So Sunderland could do exactly the same. And if you're looking for a chance to get that goal try getting a corner. Villa can't defend those to save themselves. Given the two teams' ineptitude at scoring, though, I imagine this may be a dull affair.

Prediction for the game?

RL: With that in mind, I think Villa end up winning 2-1. God knows they need the points more than Sunderland. Best of luck!
