Score Predictions: Can Sunderland further derail the Geordie season this lunchtime?

The richest club in the world visit little old Sunderland today in the FA Cup Round 3. Our RR predictions lads have a go at forecasting the outcome of what will no doubt be a proper battle of a game. BRING IT ON!

Predictions League - Latest result

Sunderland got back to strong performances and three point hauls on New Year’s Day, with a solid 2-0 home win against Preston North End.

After quite a long period of not scoring early in games or even in the first half, two goals from The Lads had the result in the bag before the break this time around.

Alex Pritchard was fed into space by Pierre Ekwah and scored an absolute belter from about 25 yards about ten minutes in, putting the lads in control early in the first period.

The roar for Alex’s goal was matched just before half time when Naz Rusyn demonstrated his pace and movement in the box to finish off a great break away run by Jack Clarke. Let’s hope that is the first of many striker contributions from Naz and others.

Those three points hauled us back into the top six in the Championship table, a point above Hull rather than squeezing in on goal difference as was the case previously.

Thanks to results later in the day falling mainly our way we remain there today, as we prepare for a weekend off from league action, and THAT GAME against the monochrome muppets from up the A19 in round three of the FA Cup.

The Predictions lads were quite optimistic ahead of the first game of 2024, and rightly so as it turned out. SAFC extended their unbeaten run to 3 games after a very well managed second half that proved more than enough to keep Preston at arms length.

Points were available for most of the lads after that win, even for Bomber who felt a draw was likely but managed to foresee Pritchard’s outside of the foot screamer being our first goal.

Only Matty goes pointless post Preston, calling Clarke to score and a draw for the lads.

League Table - Latest

As a result of being the only person to correctly guess the score, Martin extends his lead in our Predictions table to 8 points.

A one horse race for the 2023-24 Predictions title seems to be developing for the Aussie ex-pat who has spent the last few years propping up the very same table. Everything comes to those who wait, Martin.

Everyone else bar Matty scored points, however Bomber managed to be late with his submission for the Geordie cup game, so loses 2 points for a late submissions yellow card.

Clearly Bomber is too emotionally overcome with the upcoming cup tie to focus on such details. Hopefully for all this is a good weekend to come.

How the points are awarded...

Just a quick reminder on how we allocate points to our match-by-match predictions:

  • Correct score = 3 points
  • Correct outcome (but not correct score) = 1 point
  • Correct first Sunderland goalscorer = 1 point (no goal scorer is a valid call)
  • Possible deductions for being lazy and not submitting on time = 2 point deduction

There is a risk we may get battered today, but I simply have to back a narrow win, and if we get that I will be over the moon. With the injuries the Geordies have, we have a chance. We have had spells of pretty shaky defence at times in Championship games of late, so there is risk we will let at least one in especially against a premier league opponent, but I have to hope not.

Even if we can draw at our place and get the chance to replay this tie and carry out a ram raid at Sid James’ Park I would be more than happy with that. Taking this Newcastle squad to a second tie will be a huge achievement for a team who quite recently emerged from the dark days of League One. But winning would be even better. If we lose, especially after all that crap about the Black Cats Bar, we will never hear the end of it. Thank God I don't live in the NE any more.

Jack Clarke is our best player by far and with the injuries they have and questionable quality at full back, I think he can add a huge chunk to his value by scoring for us in this game. He will give them a torrid time, and I cannot wait to see it.

As per my other articles about this game, if we lose this cup tie I care a fair bit less than many, as league success is my focus and is the clubs too, quite rightly so. For today though, let’s give them a hell of a game and gain a replay minimum please lads.

Win this and the roof is coming off.

FTM.

It’s been eight long years since we locked horns with the old enemy, and much has changed in that time.

But one thing that will never change, is the unadulterated hatred between us.

The pressure is heaped heavily upon Newcastle’s door today.

After all their talk of being the richest club in the world, their European aspirations, it’s time to put your money where your mouth is.

Anything other than a comfortable win is failure. Failure to beat little old Sunderland.

Who knows, after this, Howe could “beheading” for the door.

If I predicted anything other than a Sunderland win, my old man would be turning his grave.

HA’WAY THE LADS!

“And so it begins, the great battle of our time…”

It feels like it was during the last age of men that we had a Tyne-Wear derby to look forward to. It’s been a long old while that the mags have had to sit and stew over the last of their 9 consecutive failed attempts at beating us… with SO much happening in between!

The last 8 years has seen both clubs transform entirely and will be almost unrecognisable. But one thing will not have changed… the desire to get one over our local rivals!

In all honesty this game could be anything! Point and counter-point can be made as to why we will/wont get anything from the game.

Newcastle are on a dreadful run and are severely depleted by injury, while we are the home team with the track record in the fixture. However we have been in the abyss of League One for so long it will feel like a David and Goliath battle.

In the end, it’ll be a game of fine margins that on paper we should lose… but there is no chance I’m backing us to lose a derby game!

So I’m predicting Clarke to put us 1-0 up, with Newcastle going 2-1 ahead, then a late dramatic equaliser to top it off.

Then whatever will happen in the lottery of a replay. God speed!

I’m worried and excited by this one in equal measure, but it genuinely is a no lose game for us.

They simply have to beat us, and if they don’t – well, brilliant. They’re in a bit of trouble on the field at present, and it’s a really good time to play them.

Let’s hope we give a good performance, give it our all, and come out with a win. If we do, this team will go down in history.

Haway the lads!

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Jobe

No matter what is said or done in the lead up, no matter what is said by any Newcastle fan, the pressure is completely on them to win this.

We have played best against the better teams, we are better withstanding pressure and hitting teams on the counter with the speed of our front line.

I think it’s gonna be right, but I have a gut feeling that going in front will really scare Newcastle and it’ll mean more to our lads than any of theirs. We can do this.

Dare to dream.

Newcastle are currently a club in turmoil. A litany of injuries to key players, alleged controversy off the pitch and mixed form, sets up an intriguing contest.

The first derby since March 2016 adds some fire, conspicuous by its absence, and with our recent run of 7 without loss including 6 wins, something we’ll be fighting to increase.

This is chance to win hearts and minds of our youngest supporters, some of which will never have seen a derby match in their lifetime. I remember heroes of the past such as Djbril Cissé, Kieron Richardson and Jermain Defoe, and this is a great chance for another (ideally, many!) to write themselves into the folklore.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more….
