The SAFC 365 Advent Calendar (Dec 9th): You’ve only got nine men!

Your countdown to Christmas – but with a Sunderland AFC twist!

Going down to nine men doesn’t always end in disaster…

Those who were lucky enough to get tickets for the upcoming Boxing Day trip to Hull City will be hoping there isn’t a repeat of 2013, when Gus Poyet’s Sunderland were reduced to nine men following dismissals for Andrea Dossena and Lee Cattermole just before half time.

The players that remained put up a strong fight and nearly managed to snatch a point, but it wasn’t the only instance of the Lads seeing red more than once – in 1984 they had three players dismissed in a supposed friendly in Sweden!

That occasion was marred by the shocking levels of racist abuse some of Sunderland’s squad were subjected to, although in 1978, it had been a much happier story when the side overcame red cards for Mick Henderson and Joe Bolton to beat Burnley in a famous match dubbed ‘the Battle of Turf Moor’.

Two goals from Gary Rowell ensured a 2-1 victory in a fiercely contested affair.
