Predictions League - Latest result

Sunderland bounced back from their home loss against Coventry City with a hard fought and deserved 1-0 away win at the MKM Stadium on Tuesday.

The structure displayed against Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion seemed well and truly back against Hull, as were the tactics to take on a decent team who are certainly playoff contenders.

The tactics and supporting structure worked very well in stifling the creativity of the Tigers, who’ve been quite free-scoring in recent games.

However, the skills of Anthony Patterson were required to prevent them scoring from a couple of decent shots on target, and he definitely made up for some recent errors in keeping a vital away clean sheet for the Lads.

The man who’s already a candidate for ‘player of the season’, Jack Clarke, scored the only goal that brought all three points home for Sunderland.

His drilled shot into the bottom right corner came around ten minutes from full time, to the joy of the travelling fans who’d sacrificed their Boxing Day for the trip.

As the commentators said on the day: where we would be without Clarke? Let’s hope it’s some time before we need to find out.

Today we travel to Rotherham, who beat Middlesbrough 1-0 in their most recent game. Statistically, Boro were by far the better side, with five shots on target to Rotherham’s one, and over 70% possession despite being away from home.

Maybe the Millers are trying the approach of sitting back and trying to nick wins and draws on the counter? This worked on Boxing Day and got them their first points since December 2.

Hopefully under the combined leadership of Michael Beale and Mike Dodds, we can overcome such an approach, but this has often been the type of game we’ve struggled with.

The lads were a little hesitant predicting a win for Sunderland after the poor showing against Coventry, as the table below illustrates.

Everyone bar Malc went for a draw and were thankfully wrong. He thought we’d come away with nothing at all, and was pleased to be wholly incorrect!

Changes to our predictions table are minor, with a single point for Jack, Will and Martin reinforcing the present order.

League Table - Latest

How the points are awarded...

Just a quick reminder on how we allocate points to our match-by-match predictions:

  • Correct score = 3 points
  • Correct outcome (but not correct score) = 1 point
  • Correct first Sunderland goalscorer = 1 point (no goal scorer is a valid call)
  • Possible deductions for being lazy and not submitting on time = 2 point deduction

Malc Dugdale predicts...

Score Prediction: Rotherham 1 Sunderland 4

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Jack Clarke

Rotherham are pretty poor and deservedly sit at the foot of the table with a goal difference of minus twenty six, having conceded an average of more than a goal per game.

It’s been some time since we battered someone, and I’m hoping today is the day.

However, we have to be careful that we don’t suffer the same fate as Middlesbrough, who beat the Millers in every statistic other than the final score on Boxing Day.

Leeds United have also been to the New York Stadium and left with only a share of the spoils in late November, but I’m backing Jack Clarke to open our account early in the first half, and for us to score four.

If this comes off and one of our strikers is among the goals, even better.

Michael Beale has to give one of the attacking players a chance at some stage, so why not tonight?

Matty Foster predicts...

Score Prediction: Rotherham 1 Sunderland 3

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Jobe

It was a belated Christmas present in securing all three points against a tough Hull side.

Now we face Rotherham, who are rooted to the bottom of the table and who we should beat comfortably- on paper at least!

That potentially makes it an even trickier game to manoeuvre, as we’ve generally struggled against sides towards the bottom of the table, and they’ll come into this in a buoyant mood, having ground out a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough.

However, that was only their third win all season and they’ve always followed a win with a defeat.

I’m going for a comfortable win which would set us up nicely for the New Year’s Day clash with Preston.

Bomber Davies predicts...

Score Prediction: Rotherham 0 Sunderland 2

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Patrick Roberts

I mean, who the hell knows really, such is the nature of this season!

A much-needed win for Michael Beale on Boxing Day bought himself a bit of protection from the ridiculousness of some of our supporters.

A clean sheet against Hull was almost as important as the three points, given the manner in which we conceded the goals against Coventry, and that should continue against the Championship’s bottom side who are scoring at less than one goal per game on average.

I’m banking on the law of averages in the ‘Goalscorer’ sweep; Patrick Roberts is well overdue a goal and hopefully that comes before the end of 2023.

Martin Wanless predicts...

Score Prediction: Rotherham 0 Sunderland 2

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Jobe

Another tough away game today, and we’ve not done too well this season against teams below us in the league.

Rotherham got a good result against Middlesbrough on Boxing Day but the visitors dominated and probably should’ve won.

I’m hopeful that we’ll turn in another solid display and Jobe gets the first goal in front of brother Jude, who’ll likely have his red and white shirt on if his current rate of progress continues!

Will Jones predicts...

Score Prediction: Rotherham 0 Sunderland 2

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Jobe

After another top performance against a good side, we turn our attention to the team at the foot of the table.

We’ve struggled against teams at the bottom this season and we need to start picking up these points if we’re going to be challenging come the end of the season.

We need to be more clinical. We need to be less picky with our chances, and we need to show how good we really are.

A few more days on the training pitch will be vital for Michael Beale in helping the players to understand what we need, and I hope we show more of what we can do here.

Jack Howe-Gingell predicts...

Score Prediction: Rotherham 1 Sunderland 2

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Jack Clarke

Hopefully we can capitalise on a good win away at Hull and inflict some more misery on a poor Rotherham side.

We always seem to struggle when playing the so-called lesser teams in the division, so I’m hoping for better than some of our recent encounters.

If we can get up to tempo and get someone onto the end of the decent balls we actually played against Hull, this should be comfortable.
