Score Predictions: Away day on Boxing Day - how will we fare at Hull?

The RR predictions lads ponder whether we can turn our away form around on our Boxing Day trip to Humberside

Predictions League - Latest Result

Sunderland lost 0-3 in a pretty poor home performance against Coventry on Saturday. We often play poorly against Coventry and haven’t beaten them for ages, but I don’t think anyone saw a three goal loss coming, especially with how poor we were both in attack and defence.

In my view we actually played ok in the middle of the park, but we were blunt in attack and hapless in defence. “Manager bounce” needs to come bounding in very soon, that was simply not good enough.

We move on today to a Boxing Day away game at Hull, hoping to get back to both stronger performances and better chance conversion. We certainly need to sort ourselves out given the density of fixtures coming up, and that game in a couple of weeks time.

Today, we take on Hull City who have been in mixed form across the last clutch of matches.

Like SAFC, Hull had a recent narrow loss to Bristol City away, but across the last handful of home games they have had three wins and one loss, and they have scored way more goals than we have. With a 4-1 win over Rotherham and a 3-0 against Cardiff standing out, there is a clear sign we need to be at our defensive best on Humberside, and certainly well better than at home against Coventry.

How we shore our defence up when we lost Huggins and probably wont have O’Nien after he was really struggling in the latter part of the last game, who knows.

Maybe it is time for Seelt, Alese and Pembele to help out the team, albeit probably ahead of the planned schedule.

After the result on Saturday, it will be interesting to see if Beale makes any big changes, and he may well have planned to whatever the result was to be on the eve of Xmas eve, given the intense nature of fixtures across the festive period as is the case every year.

The lads were pretty optimistic for the last match on the Saturday before Santa (which proved proper mad after what we watched), as outlined below:

With the lads failing to score never mind win (despite some fantastic chances, the main one falling for Ba), no points were scored by our predictions collective.

No change of points means no changes in our little Predictions table too. Martin is flying, the rest are hanging onto his coat tails as we head into 2024.

League Table

How the points are awarded...

Just a quick reminder on how we allocate points to our match-by-match predictions:

  • Correct score = 3 points
  • Correct outcome (but not correct score) = 1 point
  • Correct first Sunderland goalscorer = 1 point (no goal scorer is a valid call)
  • Possible deductions for being lazy and not submitting on time = 2 point deduction

Malc Dugdale predicts...

Score Prediction: Hull 1 Sunderland 0

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: No scorer

We were awful against Coventry, throwing away chances to take the lead and then defending like amateurs. I cannot see us being any better on the road today against a team who are pretty solid at home and score a lot of goals when things fall right.

I hardly ever pick the lads to lose, but this lull is hopefully our low point before Beale does get his act together and we pick our form up and kick into the new year with some sort of form to build on. If I am proved wrong and the lads step up so soon after that crappy effort, all good with me.

I would love to be miles off with this, but sadly I get a feeling the only red and white pleasure we will see this festive season has already been and gone.

Matty Foster predicts...

Score Prediction: Hull 1 Sunderland 1

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Roberts

Hull are flying under Rosenior, and are exceeding expectations in the league so far.

They sit above us in the league in the final play-off place, and I see them around this area come May.

This would be a massive result against a fellow play-off hopefuls, but their home form is decent, so I can’t see us walking away with all three.

A point wouldn’t be the end of the world in this one, and hopefully, it will keep us within touching distance of the top six.

Bomber Davies predicts...

Score Prediction: Hull 1 Sunderland 1

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Jobe

It had completely passed me by just how good a season Holler having in the championship this year. Liam Rosenior seems to be really making a name for himself as a good young coach and has his side drilled on the basics but always looking for opportunities to attack.

Much like us, they have been almost impossible to predict however Being on both sides of surprising results. they’ll be looking at the second half of the season with one eye firmly placed on a run at the play-offs, and it’s once again again that could really be anything.

That said such as our Away form this season I can’t really back us to win so it’s a 1-1 draw for me, and I fancy our man Jobe from outside of the box to equalise for the lads.

Martin Wanless predicts...

Score Prediction: Hull 2 Sunderland 2

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Clarke

Hull are in good form, their head coach has recently signed a new contract, and all seems to be going pretty well down on Humberside.

It’s out first meeting since that ridiculous 4-4 draw towards the end of last season, and while I don’t think there’ll be as many goals today, I expect to see a pretty entertaining game and the lads to emerge with a well deserved Boxing Day point.

Will Jones predicts...

Score Prediction: Hull 1 Sunderland 1

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Clarke

New contract for their manager, some stability and a great run of form leaves Hull fighting us for a play off spot come the end of 2023.

As a team that plays high and fast, they are a team we should play better against, despite having less of the ball.

I am hoping Beale is a getting more and more of an understanding of his squad, what he has, what he needs, and what he can provide.

Jack Howe-Gingell predicts...

Score Prediction: Hull 1 Sunderland 1

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Clarke

Probably our toughest fixture within the Festive Period so I think we will need to be cautious and taking a point would be a good result.

As one of our playoff rivals, they cannot be taken lightly with goals all other the pitch with no fewer than four of their players sitting on six goals.

It’s the first test for Beale in terms of the perceived higher standard of opposition and it will be interesting to see how he tweaks things, and any views into his tactical acumen, especially after that horror show last time out.
