Score Predictions: After two losses in a row, can The Lads stop the rot?

After twice coming away empty handed, Sunderland travel to Millwall to attempt to get their form and league points accumulation back on track. Our Predictions team are likely to have mixed feelings for this one…

Predictions League - Latest Result

Well… I mentioned in the midweek issue that Huddersfield may be a banana skin for the lads, and sadly that was the only prediction that ended up right.

A flat, lifeless and at times what felt like a pretty clueless performance by Tony and the lads led to our first home loss since early October, when a ten man Sunderland capitulated 0-4 to Boro.

Wednesday night for me was a worse performance than that though… we defended poorly, lacked ideas and forward momentum, and were clearly tactically deficient.

Our defence was more all over the place than in recent games, even when we had to swap out three players at once at very short notice, which doesn’t make sense.

Our midfield was blunt and static. Our width was double marked to negate it and lacked accuracy. As a result it was no surprise that yet again our strikers failed to convert.

Luke O’Nien gave us some hope of at least getting a share of the points, popping up on the back post five minutes ahead of half time, but the second half was only marginally better up to the hour mark. Post that it reverted to type.

One of those days maybe, but not a day I would like to see repeated in a hurry.

Today, we face Millwall away, who again have mixed form we need to overcome to get all three points. Away games used to be our salvation; I wouldn’t be adverse to that returning just now.

The Predictions group all went for wins which isn't a surprise given the form the terriers showed ahead of the visit to the SOL.

As a result of the midweek game being so miserable the table stays as it was ahead of the rather sorry performance on Wednesday night.

League Table

How the points are awarded...

Just a quick reminder on how we allocate points to our match-by-match predictions:

  • Correct score = 3 points
  • Correct outcome (but not correct score) = 1 point
  • Correct first Sunderland goalscorer = 1 point (no goal scorer is a valid call)
  • Possible deductions for being lazy and not submitting on time = 2 point deduction

Malc Dugdale predicts...

Score Prediction: Millwall 0 Sunderland 1

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Mayenda

I want to see a return to our stronger defence showing after a couple of poor games.

If we achieve that in some way and nick a 1-0 away win I would be very happy with that.

It’s going to be a tough game after a couple of poor results, but the recovery needs to start at some time and why not now?

1-0 away win, back on the horse and lets focus on a decent Christmas period.

Matty Foster predicts...

Score Prediction: Millwall 1 Sunderland 2

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Clarke

I honestly don’t know what Sunderland is going to turn up today, having witnessed two woeful defeats back to back.

They were two very winnable games as well, against two sides at the lower reaches of the table.

Millwall’s new gaffer Joe Edwards hasn’t had the greatest of starts.

He won his first game comfortably against Sheff Wed, but has followed that up with two defeats and shipped six goals.

Millwall’s home form is pretty woeful as well, with two wins at the Den and none since Mid-September.

We need to win this, and against my better judgement, I’ll back one today.

Bomber Davies predicts...

Score Prediction: Millwall 1 Sunderland 1

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Ballard

I mean… who even knows any more?! Millwall have only won two in their last eleven, losing their last two… but they haven’t just been beaten by Plymouth and Huddersfield like we have.

They haven’t won at home since September so in typical Sunderland fashion they’ll probably end that run against us! However, I’ll back a draw because I just can’t bring myself to bet against us.

As I wrote in the post-Huddersfield Talking Points, O’Nien and Ballard are probably our best striking partnership so I’ll go with Dan the Man to head home a Sunderland equaliser in a cagey 1-1 stalemate.

Martin Wanless predicts...

Score Prediction: Millwall 1 Sunderland 1

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Clarke

Well, I haven’t got a clue what to expect today, so I’m hoping for the best with a score draw prediction.

Clarke is due a goal, so hopefully he’ll notch and we can get a point on the board.

Will Jones predicts...

Score Prediction: Millwall 1 Sunderland 4

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Clarke

Well, what a torrid week it has been so far.

The lads need a pick up, they need to get their arses in gear and remind the league how good we really are, and what better place to do it than at the Den.

The lads love to have a shot on goal, and at some point they will come off. I believe this will be the game.

An early piece of Clarkey magic, alongside an existent Paddy Roberts giving the Millwall defence hell will get us back to winning ways.

Jack Howe-Gingell predicts...

Score Prediction: Millwall 1 Sunderland 2

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Clarke

Not sure it can get a lot worse performance wise at the minute.

We look devoid of anything and we need a real boost. My prediction is based more out of hope than any kind of expectation.

We need a win and it can come in any format. Not bringing on a million subs at once might help the cause.
