Andy’s Player Ratings: Bristol City 1-0 Sunderland - Defeat on the road for Mike’s Mackems

Despite a dubious late penalty call that was waved away, Sunderland lost away at Bristol City after Anthony Patterson gave a penalty away. Here’s how Andy rated the Lads…

Anthony Patterson: 4/10

Cost us the game with a rush of blood to the head after trying to rectify a poor pass to Dan Neil. Made one good save from distance but the home side would have been lucky with a point without Patterson’s error.

Niall Huggins: 6/10

Got up and down the line well, picked out Clarke well on one occasion in the first half and wasn’t overly troubled by Mehmeti.

Dan Ballard: 6/10

Was a danger from set pieces, with a couple of half chances coming his way and could have had a penalty in injury time. Mostly on top defensively other than potentially getting away with a foul on the edge of the box really early on.

Luke O’Nien (C): 6/10

Like Ballard he was a danger from set pieces, with one effort being saved on the line and not troubled defensively. Played a really loose ball in the early stage that put both Ekwah and Ballard in trouble.

Trai Hume: 6/10

Not troubled defensively and got forward plenty but mostly going on the inside and not giving an option on the overlap.

Dan Neil: 6/10

A quiet game for Neil, not much of an influence going forward but did cover a lot of ground closing the opposition down.

Pierre Ekwah: 6/10

Tidy enough in the middle of the park without excelling and had a couple of shots from the edge of the box.

Patrick Roberts: 5/10

Was causing Bristol City all sorts of problems before the break, without an end product. Had a couple of chances where he should really be doing better, then fired a ball too hard at Clarke when a softer cross may have resulted in a chance. Far quieter after the break.

Alex Pritchard: 6/10

Linked up well again and put in some good set pieces for his team-mates, although the only time he really threatened himself was when he hit the bar from an over-hit free kick.

Abdoullah Ba: 4/10

Rotated between left wing and up top, depending on where Clarke was but was ineffectual in both positions and usually made the wrong choice.

Jack Clarke: 6/10

Played on the left and up top at times, had one effort fired wide from a Huggins ball and picked out Roberts in the second half whose shot was immediately blocked. Did not have the room he usually does to run into.

Jobe Bellingham: 6/10

Linked up play well after his arrival and had a header well saved.

Bradley Dack: 6/10

One floated free kick to the back post was about all he did.

Adil Aouchiche: 6/10

Quite lively after replacing Pritchard.

Eliezer Mayenda: N/A

Came on very late in the game.

Man of the Match: Dan Ballard

Defended well, other than a dodgy moment early on when a foul could have been called on the edge of the box and tried his best to get us back into the game late on as we started throwing balls into the box. Could have had a penalty and got his head on a number of balls.
