Your countdown to Christmas, but with a Sunderland AFC twist!

Still got somebody you need to buy a gift for? Have you been given some Christmas cash or a bonus at work? Buy SAFC 365 then! A Sunderland anthology, it is jam packed with red and white history and will see all profits go to the Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen…

The book has an entry for each day of the year, looking back across nearly 145 years’ worth of Sunderland highs and lows, so to whet your whistle Roker Report has an advent window ready for every morning in the build up to the 25th of December.

The one and only

It somehow feels right that Sunderland’s record appearance maker is a local lad.

Jimmy Montgomery was an exceptional goalkeeper, and was rightly the number one choice between the sticks for several years.

Best remembered of course for ‘that’ save in the 1973 FA Cup final, Monty did so much more for his hometown club across his other 626 outings for the Lads.

He played for Sunderland over 150 times more than the next highest appearance maker, fellow 1964 promotion winner Len Ashurst, and regularly produced the type of acrobatics and cat-like reflexes seen at Wembley.

After making his debut in 1961, Montgomery became a mainstay from early in the following year until 1976 when he bowed out with another winners medal after taking the Division Two title.

He returned to Sunderland in 1980 and whilst he didn’t add to his tally of games went on to become an influential coach at Roker and remains a magnificent ambassador for the club to this day.
