Score Predictions: What will happen when Sunderland take on Huddersfield?

Sunderland face Huddersfield Town at home tonight, and will be keen to make up for the points dropped away to Argyle at the weekend. Here’s what our Predictions team think may happen…

Predictions League - Latest Result

The predictions lads had a bad weekend, as did SAFC, but not as bad as the committed and passionate fans who made the huge trip down there from the north east. Hats off lads and lasses, that is some epic trip, and you made yourselves heard for sure.

Despite all that commitment from our travelling fans, their aims and the hopes of the fans unable to go were dashed on the Plymouth rocks.

Despite dominating the game for large periods, Sunderland could not convert the raft of chances we created, and were beaten 2-0 by the home team’s only 2 shots on target - a classy shot from distance, and a counter attacking one touch pass which picked out a Plymouth attacker, who had better shooting boots on than all of our lads put together.

Tonight, we face Huddersfield, who have only one win in the last seven games, and are one place above the drop zone, albeit at this early stage of the season. That win was against QPR at home, when they scored two in the first 15 minutes and managed to hold on against what in my view is a side who are very likely to be in League One next campaign.

One of those banana skin games then… let’s hope the lads spot it, navigate around it and don’t slip up.

The Predictions group all went for a win at Home Park, but we sadly didn't even score any goals despite the woodwork needing a rub down and re-paint, we hit it so hard.

As a result of the unexpected goalless loss, the predictions team didn’t haul in any points at all at the weekend, though there was fair reason for hoping to get something.

No change in the table from the previous game as a result of that.

League Table

How the points are awarded...

Just a quick reminder on how we allocate points to our match-by-match predictions:

  • Correct score = 3 points
  • Correct outcome (but not correct score) = 1 point
  • Correct first Sunderland goalscorer = 1 point (no goal scorer is a valid call)
  • Possible deductions for being lazy and not submitting on time = 2 point deduction

Malc Dugdale predicts...

Score Prediction: Sunderland 4 Huddersfield 1

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Jobe

I went for 4-1 in our last home game and we really should have got four, but we were denied the additional goal by some bad fortune, and occasional decent defending and goalkeeping by the visitors.

Against Plymouth we were again unfortunate, but we simply have to take luck out of it. We need to finish more of these chances we are creating, especially against sides who are evidently less capable than we are.

I’d like to see Adil Aouchiche awarded a start, but I’m not sure who Tony would drop… we looked better second half with him involved though, in my view. I would back him to score first but with doubt that he will start, I’m backing Jobe to open the scoring.

Jobe is there or there about most weeks, and once again he hit the frame of the goal in the last match. Whether the strikers are humming or not, I back this young lad to get one, and Adil to join him if given the chance.

Matty Foster predicts...

Score Prediction: Sunderland 2 Huddersfield 0

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Rusyn

It was such a disappointing result at the weekend, but tonight presents an opportunity for a quick response.

Huddersfield have really struggled for form, with only one win in ten games, which came against fellow strugglers QPR back in October.

Their away form has been poor as well, with only one win on their travels.

I suspect they will look to sit behind the ball and try to frustrate us.

That surely will only last so long against our strong front line.

I have to back a win, I’ll go two nil and Rusyn to finally find the net.

Bomber Davies predicts...

Score Prediction: Sunderland 3 Huddersfield 1

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Clarke

Well safe to say nobody saw that Plymouth result coming! Did we jinx it? Probably! But if we are operating in a mystical and superstitious environment then prepare to be amazed!

Sunderland have alternated 3-1 wins in their last four…

3-1 v Norwich, 0-0 v Swansea, 3-1 v Birmingham, 0-2 v Plymouth, then ?-? v Huddersfield…

So by that logic alone I’m backing a 3-1 win… because it seems really quite impossible to predict SAFC this season.

Martin Wanless predicts...

Score Prediction: Sunderland 2 Huddersfield 1

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Clarke

Darren Moore has steadied Huddersfield up a bit since coming in but they’re still struggling and really are a team we need to beat if we have any play off aspirations.

We need a bounce back from Saturday’s defeat and I think we’ll get it - albeit in a tight game.

Adil Aouchiche will surely start and I reckon he’ll be a goal threat, but Jack Clarke is due to bag so I’m backing him to net first.

Will Jones predicts...

Score Prediction: Sunderland 3 Huddersfield 0

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Rusyn

After not being able to finish away from home again, we need to make these chances count.

A few changes are required to freshen things up, keep everyone on their toes and give them a chance to take their opportunity.

This SHOULD be a simple win. Huddersfield don’t keep much possession at all, so we need to utilise it.

Jack Howe-Gingell predicts...

Score Prediction: Sunderland 2 Huddersfield 0

Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Clarke

After another frustrating away game, we were undone by two shots on target resulting in two goals. We have to up the quality of our shooting and make our numerous opportunities count.

I think it’s time to get Adil Aouchiche in from the start. He clearly has quality and has the bite that we could really do with.

We should ease Huddersfield aside without major issues, but I want to see an improvement in the final third.
