Sunderland are exploring the possibility of a very late deadline day swoop for Millwall right-back Mahlon Romeo, Roker Report understands.
The 25-year-old was omitted from the Championship outfit’s last game, a 2-1 win over Blackpool, after starting the previous two - and Sunderland are looking at the possibility of bringing in the player on a permanent deal.
Portsmouth have been strongly linked with a loan move with Romeo ahead of tonight’s deadline, with Ipswich Town also being linked.
Sunderland had been looking at a loan deal for Arsenal youngster Ryan Alebiousu but loan moves for German duo Leon Dajaku and Ron-Thorben Hoffmann would take the club to the limit for loans permissible in a match-day squad.
Romeo is an Antigua and Barbados international and has played 221 times for Millwall in all competitions since signing for the club from Gillingham in 2015.
