Sunderland U23s lost out in the Play-Off final tonight on penalties in the most heartbreaking of fashions. Here’s how Gav rated the Lads...

Anthony Patterson: 10/10

Made several top-class saves to deny Palace the opportunity to score. Thought his distribution of the ball and commanding of his area was excellent. Certainly did himself plenty of favours with the first team coach and senior management in attendance.

Brandon Taylor: 7/10

Was tested repeatedly but thought he fared very well defensively. Probably struggled to have an impact going forward but that’s understandable considering he’s not blessed with pace.

Kenton Richardson: 7/10

Always seemed to be involved and deserves credit for his performance out of position - very assured and rarely put a foot wrong. You can tell he’s had senior experience.

Sam Wilding: 7/10

Worked very hard and did everything simple.

Oliver Younger: 9/10

He just loves defending. Seemed to be absolutely everywhere when we needed him to be - some great clearances and headers to keep Palace at bay. Well played young man!

Patrick Almond: 8/10

Like Younger I thought that he was excellent. Looked comfortable on the ball too. Made the best tackle of the game in the first half to deny Palace a certain goal. One to watch.

Josh Hawkes: 8/10

Was at the centre of everything we did well in the final third. Great to see him pressing and harrying off the ball too, showing his game isn’t just about scoring and creating goals.

Jake Hackett: 7/10

Tidy performance without standing out too much. Grafted his socks off.

Will Harris: 8/10

Drew plenty of praise from Mark Bright on commentary for his performance. Proper target man’s display - held the ball up well and brought others into play.

Dan Neil: 8/10

Breath of fresh air. The way he drives forward with the ball is pleasing. Was very unlucky not to score a goal in the first half when their keeper turned his brilliant header round when it looked destined for the top corner.

Ciaran Dunne: 7/10

Thought he did fairly well and floated some canny crosses into the box.

Ellis Taylor: 7/10

Like-for-like when he replaced Dunne - worked hard up and down the line as Palace enjoyed the majority of the ball in the second half. Gutted that it was his spot kick that cost us the game - he didn’t deserve that.

Ryan Wombwell: 7/10

Slotted straight in and got involved. Some big tackles and interceptions in extra time.

Man of The Match

Anthony Patterson. Unbelievable performance.
