How the points are awarded...
Just a quick reminder on how we allocate points to our match-by-match predictions:
- Correct score = 3 points
- Correct outcome (but not correct score) = 1 point
- Correct first Sunderland goalscorer = 1 point
- Possible deductions for being lazy and not submitting = to be decided
We also have our League One predictions here that went out on the site before the season began. We’ll keep an eye on these as we go along because, at the end of the season, this will come back into play when each correctly placed side adds five points to that person’s tally.
This week’s predictions...

Phil Butler says...
Sunderland 3-1 Charlton Athletic
Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Aiden O’Brien
I'm not overthinking predictions this season and I think Sunderland are going to win more than we lose. Although Charlton have sacked Nigel Adkins, they remain in poor form and Lee Johnson's men should have enough to get the better of the team from The Valley. Aiden O'Brien has performed well in the last couple so hopefully he's due a goal as well
Malcolm Dugdale says...
Sunderland 3-1 Charlton Athletic
Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Ross Stewart
There is a risk of the Addicks being released from all shackles with the manager being released this week, but despite that I think we will have too much.
3-1 to the lads and another masterclass display from the big centre forward is my call. If we can get a clean sheet and I’m wrong I’ll take 3-0!
Matthew Foster says...
Sunderland 2-1 Charlton Athletic
Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Aiden McGeady
After an absolutely smashing result on Tuesday, we face a Charlton side that have performed well below the standard I expected. I was backing us for a win before the inevitable sacking of Nigel Adkins, and that remains the same.
I just think given our flawless home form, and Charlton at being at such a low ebb, we'll come away with three points, and an identical result to the one we began our League One journey with.
Jack Howe-Gingell says...
Sunderland 2-0 Charlton Athletic
Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Ross Stewart
After an efficient win and dominant scoreline mid-week, we face the recently managerless Charlton after Nigel Adkin’s dismissal.
Charlton, like Crewe, are bumping along in the relegation places after a poor start to the season. We need to pile on the misery much as we did on Tuesday, and continue our good form. Three wins on the spin following the Portsmouth debacle would be ideal.
Charlton have a decent squad and shouldn’t be underestimated, but they are lacking confidence and we need to put them to the sword. The presence of Jayden Stockley will need to be watched, but keep playing as we have been and it will be another three points for the lads.
Will Jones says...
Sunderland 2-0 Charlton Athletic
Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Aiden O’Brien
What a midweek that was. We are the PPG kings.
Charlton losing the man at the helm could go either way. However I don’t believe the manager was disliked there so I don’t see an uprise in form. I believe we will be too good for them, with players like Dajaku off the bench I think the whole 90 mins we will overrun them and walk through them, especially at the SOL.
I feel I’m being conservative with two, could be anything with how many we can score.
Martin Wanless says...
Sunderland 4-0 Charlton Athletic
Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Ross Stewart
Charlton have been poor this season, but they’ve always been a bogey team for us. And they’ve just sacked their manager... we’ve read this script before, haven’t we?! Well, hopefully not. This is a different Sunderland, and one I am hoping will brush Charlton aside with some ease.
Chris Wynn says...
Sunderland 3-0 Charlton Athletic
Sunderland’s first goalscorer: Ross Stewart
Despite the fact Charlton dispensed with the services of Nigel Adkins following their midweek defeat at home to Accrington Stanley, I still think we’re in for a comfortable afternoon.
