Roker Roundup: Report claims that Sunderland are interested in Remi Matthews

An article in the East Anglian Times claims that Sunderland are facing competition from Ipswich to sign former Bolton goalkeeper Remi Matthews. Would you be happy if we signed him?

Sunderland interested in Matthews

Sunderland are in need of a new goalkeeper after the departure of Jon McLaughlin. The Scottish international joined Rangers on a free transfer after his Sunderland contract at expired, leaving Phil Parkinson with just Lee Burge and promising youngster Anthony Patterson to choose from.

The East Anglian Daily Times say that free agent ‘keeper Remi Matthews is of interest to Sunderland, with Ipswich Town said to be facing ‘significant’ competition for the 26-year-old goalkeeper.

Matthews has been training with Ipswich and the Tractor Boys were said to be hopeful of reaching a deal for the player but the report claims Parkinson wants to install Matthews has his number one at the Stadium of Light.

Matthews worked with Parkinson at Bolton Wanderers and the goalkeeper has also had loan spells at Plymouth Argyle, Burton Albion and Doncaster Rovers in League One, as well as Hamilton Academical in the Scottish Premiership.

Khazri set to leave?

Wahbi Khazri’s spell at St Etienne could be set to end with reports in France suggesting that he has been told by the club’s manager Claude Puel that he is not in his plans for this season.

That is according to French journalist Manu Lonjon, who says the playmaker will have to find a new challenge, two years after joining the Ligue 1 club from Sunderland.
