Competition for Mitchell

Sunderland have taken former Manchester United youngster Demetri Mitchell on trial as they look to strengthen the left back position and provide competition for Denver Hume.

The 23-year-old is a free agent after leaving United and has been training with the club in an attempt to win a contract but Sunderland may now face competition for his services according to reports.

The Daily Mail claim that Luton Town are also now interested in his services and may leave Sunderland with a decision to make as they have also been chasing the signature of former Everton left back Luke Garbutt.

Smith joins League Two team on trial

Former Sunderland defender Tommy Smith has joined Colchester United on trial as he looks to earn a contract ahead of next season.

Smith had joined Sunderland in February as a free agent to provide cover after an injury to Bailey Wright but despite making the substitutes bench twice, the New Zealand international departed the club after just three months once the coronavirus ended the season early.

He has now joined John McGreal’s side on trial and played for the first team during their 2-0 friendly defeat against Gillingham at the weekend.
