Pending a successful medical, Sunderland have completed the signing of 26-year old former Coventry City goalkeeper Lee Burge on a free transfer.
Burge - who spent the entirety of his career as a Coventry player prior to signing - was the first choice stopper between the sticks for the Sky Blues last season, featuring on 40 occasions in League One as Mark Robins’ side finished just outside of the play-off places in 8th.
It’s expected that Burge will come in as an able deputy to first-choice Jon McLaughlin, who is expected to stay at the club this summer despite strong interest in him from Millwall.
The goalkeeper made his way into the ‘League Two team of the season’ in 2018 having had an outstanding campaign, but leaves the Midlands club after a less than satisfactory season ended with his contract expiring.
Having played close to 200 professional games so far in his career, Burge has proven himself as a steady pair of hands in both League One and Two and has been first choice at the Ricoh Arena in each of the last three seasons.
