RECAP & RUMOURS: Ainsworth out of the running for Sunderland job - is this now a one horse race?

According to Sky Sports, Gareth Ainsworth has apparently decided his future lies with Wycombe Wanderers. Does that mean that Phil Parkinson will be given the Sunderland manager’s job, or are there other names in the frame?

Sky Sports have this afternoon alleged that Gareth Ainsworth is likely to stay with Wycombe Wanderers, despite holding talks with Sunderland owner Stewart Donald over our vacant manager’s position.

In the report, Sky say that a source has indicated to them that Ainsworth is set to reject any advances for his services in favour of remaining at Adams Park and lead the club into a new era under new ownership.

This comes after a report yesterday in the Northern Echo claimed that Ainsworth along with Phil Parkinson was one of the two leading contenders to replace Jack Ross.

They said that “a final decision is expected in the next 24 hours, with Donald set to make a formal offer to the club’s preferred candidate in that time frame”.

So - is Phil Parkinson set to be the new Sunderland manager, or are there other names still in the frame that we aren’t aware of? Time will of course tell, and it’s likely that we’ll know very soon one way or the other who has got the job.
