Transfer Latest: Report claims Sunderland looking to sign free-scoring Tom Eaves & John Marquis

Sunderland have been unsuccessful thus far in their attempts to sign Will Grigg - and as a result, they’re exploring other options in League One’s top scorer John Marquis & Gillingham powerhouse Tom Eaves.

Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie has this afternoon claimed that Sunderland are looking into the possibility of signing Gillingham’s Tom Eaves and Doncaster’s John Marquis as they bid to add much-needed firepower to their attack before Thursday night’s transfer deadline.

Downie went on to admit that we are finding it difficult in our attempt to sign Wigan Athletic forward Will Grigg and, as such, Eaves and Marquis are now firmly on our radar.

Sunderland have now seen multiple bids for Grigg rejected by Wigan, despite meeting their valuation of the player on more than one occasion, and with time dwindling down in the transfer window it appears that the club are aggressively exploring their options.

Tom Eaves has 14 goals this season in League One and impressed with his performance in our 4-1 win in Kent earlier in the season, whilst Doncaster hitman Marquis tops the third tier scoring charts and has shown unbelievable consistency in front of goal over recent years in red and white with the south Yorkshire side.

Sunderland’s hierarchy know that they cannot be unsuccessful in their attempts to sign two centre forwards before the transfer window closes on Thursday night, having failed thus far to fill the spaces vacated by Josh Maja and Jerome Sinclair following their departures from the club earlier in the month.

Downie has also confirmed reports from last night that promising young Glasgow Celtic winger Lewis Morgan is headed to Wearside in order to complete his medical, having turned down Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen in favour of a loan move south of the border.
