Sunderland manager Jack Ross confirmed this afternoon that promising young midfielder Elliot Embleton has joined up with league Two side Grimsby Town until January.
The 19-year old - who can play right across the midfield but is perhaps best utilised wide on the left or as a number 10 - is one of the most highly-rated young players currently at the club but is at the stage in his career where he needs to be playing first team football on a regular basis.
Jack Ross, speaking to SAFC.com, said:
I’ve spoken quite a lot to Elliott because I really like him. Every time he has trained with me, he has got better, but he needs to be playing. I think in hindsight he probably could have done with this over the second half of last season, being out on loan and coming back in having played first-team games.
I think it will be good for him, and it will just be until January in the first instance. It lets him get games at a senior level, and then we can assess it from there.
Grimsby currently sit in 17th in League Two and have been in the market for new players for a number of weeks in a bid to improve their slow start to the season.
Embleton will join former Sunderland players Danny Collins and Jordan Cook at Blundell Park on a deal which keeps him there until the start of next year.
The England U19 international joins fellow Sunderland U23s player Connor Shields in leaving the club on a loan deal ahead of tomorrow’s 5pm transfer deadline.
