There has been a smattering of confusion amongst supporters, particularly on social media, regarding the first choice colour of the shorts (and, to a lesser degree, the socks) since Sunderland released the new home kit for the upcoming season.
When the kit was initially released, both red and black shorts were shown, as seen below, and it was thought the red was just a change option.

However, in all of the promotion material since the unveiling - and during the majority of our pre-season outings - Sunderland have used the all red option.
Despite this, during yesterday’s Q&A session which followed the Red and White Army’s Annual General Meeting at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland’s Managing Director Tony Davison explained that due to the fact we have an all black away kit we needed red shorts and socks as a change - but said the bottom line was “red and white shirts, black shorts”.

Stewart Donald did confirm after the meeting on his Twitter account during a conversation with supporters that were discussing the issue that the home kit will consist of the red shorts and socks, with the black option from the away kit just an alternative in case of a clash.

So despite the initial confusion, the home strip for the coming season has been confirmed as an all red affair, with the option to alternate the shorts there just in case we need to.
We hope this clears up any confusion but, for the record, this will only be the second time in Sunderland’s history that the home kit will have red shorts - with the other being the controversial ‘candy stripe’ kit that we had between 1981-83.
Sunderland have traditionally had black shorts with our home kit throughout the majority of our history, save for a spell of white shorts between 1961 and 1972 (as well as one season in 1887) and a short period where the home kit had navy blue shorts - which was way before the club had even adopted the red and white stripes.
