Roker Report can reveal that former Manchester United and Wigan Athletic left back Reece James is currently undergoing a medical at the Academy of Light and, provided everything goes well, he’ll sign on a free transfer today.
James was very highly rated at a young age, and signed up with the Latics in 2015.
After being a virtual ever-present in the Wigan side he suffered an injury to his ankle ligament and tendons which not only kept him out for the rest of the season but also the entirety of the following campaign.
He made 28 appearances last season for Wigan as they won League One, but was allowed to leave the club upon the expiration of his contract - and this made him a top target for Sunderland manager Jack Ross.
The club had lined up a loan deal for Manchester United’s Cameron Borthwick-Jackson but it is thought that Ross preferred to pursue a deal for James first, and if he can pass a medical he’ll sign along the dotted line today before heading out to Portugal to join up with the rest of the squad for pre-season training.
Joining James in signing today will be Hibernian Player of the Year Dylan McGeouch, who is also arriving on a free transfer after he rejected the opportunity to stay in Edinburgh in order to come to Sunderland.
