Sunderland have passed the 20,000 mark in season card sales. The news comes after new owner Stewart Donald challenged Sunderland fans to achieve the feat by June 22nd.
Since the challenge was issued a fortnight ago, where Donald asked supporters to get behind the club so the club can properly back Jack Ross, fans have risen to the occasion and purchased thousands of additional season cards.
After the news was announced, executive director Charlie Methven told the club’s website:
This is the start of something incredibly exciting. Stewart and I have been blown away by the support shown towards the club since our arrival and we will reward it wherever we can.
As such, season card holders will have priority access to our pre-season games which will be confirmed next week. Surpassing the 20,000 mark is a testament to the supporters’ loyalty, but there’s plenty of gas left in this tank and we now want to exceed last season’s total.
The new era is well underway, but we’re not done yet.
He has now challenged the Sunderland faithful to surpass the 21,600 tickets sold last season - an incredible feat if achieved.

The news comes after a summer of change on Wearside. The club have new ownership, a new manager, and a raft of changes to player personnel lingering on the horizon.
One thing that continues to be needed, however, is the passion and energy provided by the fanbase - something Stewart Donald noted last week:
I understand why people may have fallen out of love with their club and why they stopped coming and this is why I’m writing to them. I want them to know that this is a new Sunderland and we need them back.
We want to make the Stadium of Light a vibrant, energising place to watch and play football, where fans will enjoy coming and we are doing everything within our power to encourage as many as possible to be part of what we are doing here.
The fans have responded magnificently, and no doubt there’s more to come.
