Sunderland progressed in the League Cup thanks to a 1-0 victory over Bury at Gigg Lane.

Simon Grayson picked a strong side which never quite managed to get into full swing against stubborn enough opponents managed by former Black Cats midfielder Lee Clark.

Jason Steele retained his place in goal with Adam Matthews and John OShea stepping into defence in place of Lamine Kone and Billy Jones.

Darron Gibson earned his first nod of the season with Lee Cattermole not involved. Wahbi Khazri started with ex-Bury man James Vaughan named on the bench.

Sunderland had plenty of possession but were largely restricted to half chances and long efforts on goal. George Honeyman’s 69th minute strike capped the best move of the night.

Jason Steele, 6/10 - Started a bit shakily in front of the travelling fans. Claimed incoming balls with ease as he grew into the game. Bury only had one shot on target.

Adam Matthews, 6/10 - Looked tidy enough but we’re looking for a bit more.

Tyias Browning, 6/10 - Battered a couple of Bury forwards. Big lad.

John O’Shea, 7/10 - A few headed clearances and did his usual job on the Shakers’ big lad up front. Tidy.

Brendan Galloway, 5/10 - Showed promise overlapping with McGeady early on but defensively out of shape and can’t seem to get his feet planted right when tracking an oncoming winger.

Darron Gibson, 7/10 - Composed in possession and kept the midfield ticking nicely, tracked oncoming Shakers with ease and had time and space on the ball.

Didier Ndong, 5/10 - Flashes of drive from the middle - but needs to keep that tempo up to make an impact on matches. If he could pick a few more key passes he would add so much to his game. Blazed over late on.

George Honeyman, 8/10 - Lively and got himself a goal in a forward sweep he started and finished. Involved in Sunderland attacks, put himself about and was generally just fired up in the second half. Earned himself another start against Norwich this weekend. Looked delighted to score and so he should.

Aiden McGeady, 7/10 - Came close early on when he was denied by ex-Sunderland keeper Joe Murphy. Bright, tricky and quality. Taken off on 58 minutes.

Wahbi Khazri, 6/10 - Had a 30-yarder in the first half which went close-ish and launched himself forward a few times. Should have scored five minutes into the second period but slipped over. Didn’t offer much to general play though and was taken off on 76 minutes.

Lewis Grabban, 6/10 - Put himself about but tended to naturally drift out wide and had hoped to see a bit more from him up front leading the line in the first half. Taken off at the break.

Subs

Lynden Gooch - 6/10 - a 76th minute introduction. Didn’t see much of the ball.

Joel Asoro, 5/10 - a 58th minute introduction for Aiden McGeady. Did little of note except give the ball away and a concede a couple of fouls. Had a late chance blocked.

James Vaughan, 6/10 - Came on at half time. Sterile.
