Sunderland 0-4 Southampton: Player Ratings & MOTM Poll - Vote!

Sunderland followed up last week's sensational victory over Crystal Palace in the only way Sunderland know how - by getting walloped at home by an under-strength, low-on-confidence mid-table side. To the ratings!

Vito Mannone - 5

Had an early scare when he bottled a one-on-one against Manolo Gabbiadini and then failed to get a strong hand on to the effort for the first goal. As soon as Pickford is fit again he should be right back in the side.

Billy Jones - 6

Promising start but was torn to bits by Southampton's left hand side. One of the better members of the back five but that's not saying much.

Jason Denayer - 4

Almost gave away a penalty in the first half then scored an own goal, great times.

John O'Shea - 4

Hauled off at half time but was absolutely tortured by Gabbiadini and literally every other Southampton player. Like Kone, complete mess of a performance.

Lamine Kone - 3

An absolute night and day performance from last weekend. Beaten far too easily by Gabbiadini for the first, then turned so easily for the second and was just utterly turd from start to finish.

Bryan Oviedo - 6

Started very brightly offering an attacking threat down the left hand side. Faded significantly in the second as Southampton limited his time on the ball.

Didier Ndong - 6

Looked all the part a £13 million player in the opening stages. Ran the game in the first 20 minutes but went into his shell as soon as the first goal went in. Had our only shot on target, so there's that I guess.

Darron Gibson - 6

Like many of the midfield, started very well threading passes to Defoe but, like many others, faded in the second half as Southampton overran the midfield.

Sebastian Larsson - 5

Harried around like his normal Larsson self but was pretty ineffective. And someone please take him off free-kicks, I genuinely can't remember the last time he had a good one.

Adnan Januzaj - 6

Offered our only creative outlet and looked very sharp in the opening 15 minutes. Unlucky not to score with an early chance before a great run ended in Defoe uncharacteristically miss-hitting his shot. Huffed and puffed in the second half but to no avail.

Jermain Defoe - 5

An off-day for the absolute boy that Jermain Colin Defoe. A bad touch in the first half denied him the only chance to come his way but other than that he was pretty anonymous.

Subs:

Steven Pienaar (for John O'Shea) - 5

Did Larsson's job even less effectively than Larsson himself.

Fabio Borini (for Sebastian Larsson) - 5

Can't remember him doing anything so the perfect Borini performance.

Wahbi Khazri (for Darron Gibson) - 4

Few things about Khazri a) he does exist b) he was rubbish and c) that's probably why he's not been playing. In the space of 10 minutes he managed to play a ridiculously wayward pass to Billy Jones, failed to track Ryan Bertrand for Southampton's fourth goal and then got booked for handballing a goalbound shot for literally no reason. God he was rubbish.
