Player Ratings: Southampton 1 - 1 Sunderland

A Jermain Defoe penalty followed by a Jay Rodriguez equaliser saw Southampton and Sunderland play out a 1-1 draw at St. Mary's. Here's how the lads played.

Jordan Pickford - 6

A good game from the young stopper, making some important saves before we took the lead. It can't be denied that he was poor for the equaliser though and he'll be disappointed. A decent performance all round though and that's what he needs to focus on.

Javier Manquillo - 8

A very good debut. Looked dangerous going forward and dependable at the back. Quietened off as the game went on and the team sat deeper, but plenty to be encouraged by from the loanee.

Lamine Kone - 7

The type of performance that he'll need to continue putting in if fans are to forget his transfer saga. He certainly showed us what we'll miss if he does end up exiting the club.

Papy Djilobodji - 6

Good on the ball and he displayed a nice range of passing. Was too rash to make challenges though and dives in a bit too much. Still looks like he has plenty of potential though and he could form a good partnership with Kone, given some work.

Patrick van Aanholt - 7

Similar to Manquillo, barely put a foot wrong and stood up to Southampton targeting our left hand side very well.

Jack Rodwell - 7

Played the role of midfield organiser well and his work off the ball was key to Southampton finding it difficult to get into the box, in the second half. Looks much more suited to the deeper role than he does being a box to box player.

Lynden Gooch - 5

Struggled to get involved as much as he has in previous games and didn't really make anything happen when he did get on the ball. Understandable though given his experience, we can't expect consistency just yet.

Steven Pienaar - 7

Like last week, he pulled the strings in midfield very impressively. Not scared of doing his share of defensive work either. Looks like a decent piece of business.

Fabio Borini - 6

Very sharp in the first half, buzzing around all over the pitch with some cute touches. If he keeps on that trend, we'll know that his strong pre season wasn't just a false promise.

Adnan Januzaj - 7

Drifted in and out of the game but never failed to look dangerous when he got hold of the ball. The run he made to win a freekick on the edge of the box, in the second half, was absolutely gorgeous.

Jermain Defoe - 7

Always a threat and still giving defenders nightmares. Cleverly won the penalty and took it brilliantly. Comes up when it matters for us all the time.

Duncan Watmore (sub) - 6

Should have done better after a good dribble gave him a shooting chance, on two occasions. Not a bad cameo though but it proved why he's better off the bench at the moment.

Jeremain Lens (sub) - 7

Good cross that lead to Defoe winning the penalty. Just like he did against Middlesbrough, kept working hard too.

Donald Love (sub) - 6

Not really on long enough to make an impact but didn't do anything particularly wrong.

Man Of The Match - Javier Manquillo
