Sunderland won the basement battle at Carrow road thanks to goals by Borini, Defoe and Watmore as Sunderland go within a point of the Canaries.

Sunderland started the game looking shaky as Norwich settled better and they had the first shot on target when Mbokani leaped above Kaboul to head straight at Mannone on 12 minutes.

Sunderland created their first chance on 17 minutes after Kirchhoff headed down for Borini who flashed a shot across goal as Sunderland started to come into the game more.

Norwich nearly broke the deadlock on 26 minutes after Jarvis beat Van Aanholt far too easily down the wing and his cross was nearly turned into the Sunderland net by Kaboul but Mannone made the sharp save.

Sunderland upped the pressure before half time and they got the all important first goal on 41 minutes through a Fabio Borini penalty. Defoe floated a ball across to Borini who controlled it well and was brought down by Wisdom and the Italian got up to slot home the penalty into the bottom corner.

Sunderland set back straight from kick off in the second half and were nearly punished by Redmond who struck his long range effort against the post.

Sunderland made it two on 52 minutes. Kirchhoff won the ball off Bassong before playing it to Borini who supplied Defoe with a pin point cross to slide home Sunderland’s second at the back post.

The Black Cats were living a charmed life after going two goals in front as Norwich were laying siege to the Sunderland goal. Cattermole had to clear Mbokani’s effort off the line and soon after Cattermole again headed off the line to deny Mbokani.

Sunderland rode out the Norwich pressure after the second goal and they could have wrapped up the three points on 78 minutes when Watmore rounded Ruddy but his touch took him away from goal and the ball went out.

Sunderland did wrap up the three points in the 90th minute as Larsson slipped in Watmore who could have squared it to Defoe but he went himself and slid it home.
