Vito Mannone– 8
Made some good saves throughout and commanded his box really well. He couldn’t do anything with the goal as Van Dijk put the ball in the only place Mannone couldn’t get to.
Patrick Van Aanholt – 7
A better performance defensively from Van Aanholt and he got forward as much as he could. He created a good chance for Rodwell in the first half.
DeAndre Yedlin– 7
Great defensive performance from Yedlin and an all round big effort from the American.
Younes Kaboul– 7
Kaboul did ok, but without Kone there to back him up he might have been in trouble but still a good shift from Kaboul considering he hasn’t played much.
Lamine Kone – 8
Marked Pelle out of the game from start to finish and provided the assist for Defoe.
Jan Kirchhoff – 8
Kirchhoff controlled the midfield again with his composed play, he did the simple things well and effectively. He was brought off just before the equaliser.
Jack Rodwell – 5
Missed a golden chance in the first half and he went missing for periods in the second half.
Yann M’Vila – 6
Didn’t do a lot in attacks and he just kept play ticking over
Wahbi Khazri – 6
He hit the post with a free kick in the first half but apart from that his delivery wasn’t the best again. His general play was solid but nothing special.
Fabio Borini– 8
Borini really put a shift in running all game and he had a couple of chances that he created himself which went close. He was fouled by Fonte for the defender’s red card.
Dame N’Doye– 4
Was brought off shortly after half time and it wasn’t quick enough.
Jermain Defoe– 8 (sub)
He put Sunderland in front with his only chance. He did all he could.
Seb Larsson– 5 (sub)
Had a great chance that you would’ve expected him to bury. He did his usual running but Sunderland sat far too deep at the end.
John O’Shea– 1 (sub)
Brought on just before Southampton’s equaliser and he didn’t mark Van Dijk. He had one job to do and he couldn’t do it.
