Newcastle United 1-1 Sunderland: Player Ratings

Sunderland had to settle for a point at St James, here’s how the lads played.

Vito Mannone– 7

Made all the saves you’d expect him too and commanding his box very well. He could do nothing with Mitrovic’s header.

Patrick Van Aanholt – 7

Gave his all in both attack and defence. He went close to giving Sunderland a 2 goal lead with a great strike.

DeAndre Yedlin– 6

He defended well all day but his foul throw gave Newcastle the ball which led to their equaliser.

Younes Kaboul– 7

He defended well with Kone when Sunderland looked stable but he was substituted midway through the second half.

Lamine Kone – 7

Much like Kaboul he looked solid all game especially in the first half but Sunderland sat back far too much in the second allowing Newcastle more chances.

Jan Kirchhoff – 8

Looks calm and composed on the ball and he keeps play ticking over. Doesn’t seem to be able to last the full 90 mins though.

Jack Rodwell – 5

Performed adequately in the first half but not sure he left the changing room for the second half.

Yann M’Vila – 6

Similar to Rodwell he looked ok in the first half and he made a goal line clearance in the second but the midfield seemed to disintegrate in the second half.

Wahbi Khazri – 6

Looked bright throughout showing flashes of brilliance although his set pieces overall were a bit poor and he was surprisingly substituted late on as he looked like a good out ball.

Fabio Borini– 8

He put a real shift in all game going forward and tracking back and his shot led to Defoe’s goal

Jermain Defoe– 7

Missed a chance early in the game but he took his goal really well. He didn’t have much service in the second half as Sunderland sat too deep for the majority.

John O’Shea– 5 (sub)

Came on for Kaboul but Sunderland were under pressure long before O’Shea was introduced.

Dame N’Doye– 3 (sub)

Poor substitution from Allardyce as N’Doye offered nothing. He should have stood up to Wijnaldum before Newcastle’s goal but he made it easy for the Dutchman.

Lee Cattermole– 5 (sub)

He came on far too late. He should have been on to protect a lead and not a point

Man Of The Match – Jan Kirchhoff
