Sunderland 2-1 Manchester United: Kone Gives Black Cats Massive Win

Sunderland claimed a vital win at the Stadium of Light thanks to a late Kone header.

Goals from new January signings Wahbi Khazri and Lamine Kone gave Sunderland a massive win against Manchester United as the Black Cats move a point from safety.

Sunderland broke the deadlock after only 3 minutes through a Wahbi Khazri free kick. Van Aanholt won the free kick out on the left and Khazri’s ball in was dummied by Defoe before finding its way into the bottom corner.

Sunderland could have made it 2 nil on 10 minutes after a scramble in the box led to Defoe having a sight at goal from 6 yards but Darmian got his foot in just in time.

Sunderland were well on top and had a penalty claim turned down after Khazri’s shot hit the hands of Schneiderlin. Shortly after that Cattermole had a shot from the edge of the box trickle wide.

Manchester United came into the half more and saw a period of sustained possession which led to them levelling the score on 39 minutes. Mannone made the save from Mata’s shot but he couldn’t prevent Martial from dinking the ball over him from the rebound for the equaliser.

Three minutes into the second half and Sunderland had another penalty appeal waived away after Rooney blocked O’Shea’s header with his arm.

Sunderland were inches from re - taking the lead on 53 minutes after Cattermole fed Van Aanholt in down the left, he crossed for Defoe whose goalbound effort was blocked by Blind sending the ball inches past the post.

Sunderland missed a golden chance to go back in front on 61 minutes when Cattermole played N’Doye clean through on goal but the front man’s shot was saved well by the outstretched leg of De Gea.

Sunderland were dominating play now and Khazri went close with a free kick before Kone saw his shot tipped over from a corner.

Sunderland were finally rewarded for their constant pressure with a goal on 82 minutes from Lamine Kone. A corner whipped in from Khazri was powerfully headed home by Kone.
