After Adam Johnson pleaded guilty to one count of sexual activity with a girl who he did not reasonably believe to be over 16, and another of grooming, Sunderland have terminated the winger's contract with immediate effect.
Club statement from Sunderland AFC.
In light of Adam Johnson's guilty pleas, the club has today terminated his contract with immediate effect.
The club will make no further comment.
The sacking of Johnson comes quick on the heels of Adidas terminating their boot deal with the former England international, with the sportswear giant putting out a statement which read;
Adidas can confirm that it has terminated its contract with footballer Adam Johnson with immediate effect.
This follows his guilty pleas entered earlier this week.
Sam Allardyce had already confirmed that the player wouldn't be involved in Saturday's home game against Manchester United but Sunderland were believed to be stunned when the 28-year-old changed his plea to two of the charges to guilty, leaving the club with no other option than to terminate his contract.
