Jordan Pickford - 7

Great saves from Chadli, Fletcher and Rondon kept us in the game. Form like this is going to get him noticed elsewhere unfortunately.

Jason Denayer - 5

Solid and steady going forward but let Phillips have too much space in the first half. Perhaps will come on with more match time.

John O'Shea - 6

The defence was better this week and that must be down to his influence and organisation.

Lamine Kone - 6

Looked more engaged, especially in the first half. Head dropped after West Brom went ahead but rallied in the second half. A better performance. Still not up to last season unfortunately.

Javi Manquillo - 5

Had some good runs going forward and coped reasonably well with McNair. Still has something to prove for me.

Wahbi Khazri - 7

Looked more like the player of last season, determined, industrious, at the heart of most things going forward. Must start from now on.

Jan Kirchhoff - 5

In contrast - where is the player from last year? Seems to be lacking the control and composure that made him stand out, and his reluctance to shoot is becoming an embarrassment.

Didier Ndong - 6

Good first half performance especially. If he can achieve consistency could be some player for us. Poor lack of concentration to miss the Denayer pass in the second half.

Paddy McNair - 5

Solid first half performance, but went quiet in the second.

Duncan Watmore - 8 (Man Of The Match)

Got to give it to the man, ran his socks off and was at the heart of everything we did well. Made the goal for van Aanholt from nothing. Man of the Match.

Jermain Defoe - 7

Quality as always, missed a sitter on 3 mins but you can't complain with one miss, can you? Always looking to press and harry the centre backs and lead from the front. On another day would have had at least one goal.

Patrick van Aanholt - 7

Did well for the goal and suits the midfield position quite well. Would he have come on if Kirchhoff hadn't been injured?

Jack Rodwell - 5

Did enough without impressing. Usual day at the office.

Lynden Gooch - 6

Came on late and was typically busy in the centre of the park. Good impact sub at very least.

Substitutes: Mika Domingues, Papy Djilobodji, Lynden Gooch, Jack Rodwell, Patrick van Aanholt, Donald Love, George Honeyman, Lynden Gooch.
