Second half goals from Eriksen, Dembele and Kane condemned Sunderland to defeat at White Hart Lane after Van Aanholt had given the Black Cats the lead.

Pickford was called into action early as Tottenham had the first big chance of the game through Harry Kane. The forward tried his luck from long range but Pickford did well to turn his curling effort round the post.

Spurs had another chance on 9 mins after a deflected shot caused chaos in the Sunderland defence which saw Alli shoot over from 10 yards.

Tottenham wasted a golden opportunity on 34 mins after Sunderland lost possession from a short corner allowing Spurs to counter attack, but Lamela dragged his left foot shot wide of the far post when Eriksen looked better placed.

Sunderland took the lead against the run of play on 41 mins through Patrick Van Aanholt. A beautiful threaded ball from Johnson set up Van Aanholt who smashed the ball home from close range.

Sunderland’s lead only lasted a minute as Spurs equalised immediately through Eriksen. Kane’s effort was initially saved by Pickford but the ball fell to Eriksen who scuffed the rebound into the net despite the efforts of Cattermole on the line, who should have been able to clear.

Sunderland had a great chance to re-take the lead on 52 mins after a quick counter from a Spurs free kick led to Johnson playing Defoe through on goal but the Englishman shot against the side netting.

Spurs took the lead on 59 mins after Dembele found space on the edge of the box before striking the ball into the near corner. Pickford made the initial save from Rose’s shot before Dembele struck home.

Tottenham made it three on 67 mins as Eriksen’s long range effort deflected off Kirchhoff who turned his back giving Pickford no chance.

Sunderland looked unorganised when the formation changed to a back five before the hour mark as Tottenham scored their fourth from the penalty spot. Kirchhoff who had a debut to forget brought down Rose needlessly and Kane buried the spot kick into the corner.
