After completing the signing of Sebastian Coates yesterday, it looks as if Sunderland are moving quickly to strengthen the centre of defence with reports in Italy claiming we have reached an agreement with Zenit Saint Petersburg for Nicolas Lombaerts.
According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio we've agreed a fee of around £5m for the Belgian international and are hoping to make him our second signing of the summer.
The 30-year-old left-footed central defender joined Zenit in 2007 from Belgian side KAA Gent and has been a regular ever since, going on to make 244 appearances in all competitions for the Russian club, scoring 11 goals along the way. Lombaerts has also been a regular member of the Belgian national side, with 35 caps and 3 goals to his name.
Should this report be accurate and Sunderland go on to sign the player, they will have beaten off competition from Galatasaray, Valencia and Everton who have all shown interest in Lombaerts in recent weeks. This potential signing is could also see our interest in Celtic's Virgil van Dijk come to an end, after Coates signed a four-year-deal and Wes Brown and John O'Shea signed a new one and two-year contract extension respectively.
