Dick Advocaat only made two changes from the team that ended Gus Poyet's reign in charge, with Connor Wickham and Jordi Gomez replacing Ricky Alvarez and Liam Bridcutt. Alvarez misses out due to injury and Bridcutt drops to the bench.

Adam Johnson returns to the squad and takes a place on the substitutes bench after the club lifted his suspension, where he'll be joined by young winger Duncan Watmore.

Sunderland (4-3-3): Costel Pantilimon; Anthony Reveillere, John O'Shea, Wes Brown, Patrick van Aanholt; Seb Larsson, Jack Rodwell, Jordi Gomez; Connor Wickham, Jermain Defoe, Steven Fletcher.

Subs: Vito Mannone, Santiago Vergini, Billy Jones, Liam Bridcutt, Adam Johnson, Duncan Watmore, Danny Graham.

There is only one change for West Ham, with Carl Jenkinson returning in place of Joey O'Brien, after being unable to play against his parent club Arsenal last week.

West Ham United (4-5-1): Adrian; Carl Jenkinson, James Collins, Cheikhou Kouyate, Aaron Cresswell; Stewart Downing, Alexander Song, Mark Noble, Kevin Nolan, Matt Jarvis; Diafra Sakho.

Subs: Jussi Jaaskelainen, Guy Demel, Joey O'Brien, Diego Poyet, Morgan Amalfitano, Nene, Carlton Cole.
