The opening stages of the game were even with Sunderland even pressing high at times but it was Villa who broke the deadlock after 16 minutes. The Black Cats were undone by a great team goal after a quick break down the left saw Bacuna set free and his square ball found Benteke who passed the ball into the net.
Things got worse for Sunderland 2 minutes later when Villa doubled their lead. A mix up between O’Shea and Pantilimon allowed Agbonlahor to go through on goal where the frontman finished well at the near post.
It should have been worse for the Black Cats on the half hour mark when Bacuna again got free down the left. This time it was Sinclair who received the square pass 6 yards from goal but the Englishman managed to scoop the ball over the bar.
Sunderland had a big penalty appeal turned down on 33 minutes when the ball struck Clark on the hand but the referee waived the appeals away.
It got embarrassing for Sunderland on 37 minutes when Agbonlahor made it three. Another counter attack by Villa saw Agbonlahor stroll unchallenged into the box where the Sunderland defenders sat back and watched him slot the ball past Pantilimon.
It didn’t take Villa long to score again. Bacuna’s cross from the left again found Benteke who rose highest to nod past Pantilimon.
After a minute of the restart Sunderland could have found themselves five down but an excellent save from Pantilimon denied N’Zogbia.
Sunderland never looked like scoring and they could only muster long range efforts from Rodwell and Reveillere but both were straight at Guzan.
Fletcher hit the post on 80 minutes but the Black Cats were woeful as Aston Villa knocked the ball around the spineless Sunderland side that didn’t seem to care.
