Goals, goals and goals. Another week and another compilation of the greatest goals scored by past and present Sunderland players.
This week we turn our attention to our centre backs' scoring exploits.
They're rare happenings. We rarely see it, but they pop up and surprise us every so often. However little they occur, we've still seen our lot produce some quality strikes when they join in with the attack.
Vying to join last weeks winner, who amassed 61% of the votes, Nedum Onuoha, Kieran Richardson and Mart Poom in our team, we've selected seven of the finest goals scored by our central defenders for you to chose from, with the two highest voted being included in the team.
Which two will it be? It's over to you...
Stan Varga - West Ham
A stormer of a header from the Slovakian starts us off. Scoring his first goal for the club, Stan got up well to rocket the ball into the net against the Hammers back in 2001.
Andy Melville v Oxford
Andy wrapped up the three points in a 3-1 victory with this technically brilliant finish. Struck with the inside the right foot, placed in the top corner and against his former employers, the goal had it all.
Danny Higginbotham v Middleborough
In the match that confirmed the lads' safety in their first season back in the Premier League, two defenders combined to put the lads back on level terms in this exciting wear-tees derby. Danny Collins swung in a wonderful cross, which Higgy expertly headed past Brad Jones in the ‘Boro net.
Gary Breen v Cardiff City
Scoring one of his seven goals for the club, the then-captain Breen set himself well before volleying the ball into the net.
Gary Bennett v Manchester United
One of a few positive moments of the 90/91 season, Gary produced a moment of magic in the 89th minute to secure the three points against Manchester United.
John O'Shea v Stoke City
It wouldn't be right to not include our current captain in the compilation, so his goal against Stoke was a gimme to be included. With the lads desperately needing a goal, up popped John to stretch/scoop his left foot to catch the in swinging corner delivery, diverting it into the net.
Jackie Ashurst v Cardiff City
In a 2-1 loss that effectively stopped Sunderland getting promoted in the 78/79 season, Ashurst produced this wonderful strike to give Sunderland a chance to turn things around. Unfortunately it wasn't to be, but at least we have this to saviour.
So, there's your lot. Vote for your favourite and remember to join us next week when we take a look at the greatest goals scored by our left midfielders.
