Manchester United 2-0 Sunderland: Player Ratings

Here’s how the lads played

Alex Livesey/Getty Images

Costel Pantilimon – 6

Was doing ok, he fumbled a couple of shots and he parried the ball straight to Rooney for the second.

Patrick Van Aanholt – 5

Ran the line all day offering an option going forward and did ok defensively considering United attacked the wings on a regular basis.

Anthony Reveillere- 6

Ashley Young found lots of space down the flank but Reveillere dealt with him reasonably well considering the pace difference. He didn’t offer anything going forward, but that was expected.

John O’Shea – 5

O’Shea was doing really well marshalling the defence against the United frontline until he gave the penalty away were he probably should have let Falcao shoot.

Wes Brown – 6

Brown like O’Shea was doing a decent job in the middle until he was wrongly sent off.

Lee Cattermole – 6

Put himself about and closed down the United players when they were in dangerous areas. Decent shift.

Jordi Gomez – 4

Didn’t offer anything in attack or defence and when he did have the ball he took too long to pass. Didn’t look comfortable tracking runners and was continually slow to close down the opposition near our box.

Seb Larrson – 6

Same as Cattermole. He was defensively sound and put himself about, everything was going to plan until Brown got sent off.

Adam Johnson – 4

Looked sharper at the start but faded away as the game went on. Didn’t really contribute anything.

Connor Wickham - 5

Wickham did ok but he should’ve passed to Defoe in the first half which would have given Defoe an easier chance.

Jermain Defoe – 5

Signs looked promising early doors when he was finding space between the lines but as the game progressed he was left isolated up front.

Santiago Vergini – 6 (sub)

Came on after the sending off to tighten things up at the back and overall he did his job well.

Danny Graham – 5 (sub)

Couldn’t really do anything with 10 men.

Steven Fletcher -5 (sub)

Brought on just before United got the second but the game was basically over and Fletcher had no chances.

Man Of The Match: Wes Brown

He was having a really good game until the referee destroyed it.
