Well a bit of good news at last. Duncan Watmore has signed a long-term deal with the club that sees him contracted to Sunderland until 2020. It seems just reward for someone that is developing with such promise and at a rapid pace.
Watmore has already been awarded Barclays U21 Premier League Player of the Season for the 2014-15 and has notched up some fine displays on international duty more recently with the England U21 squad. Speaking about the deal Big Sam said:
"Duncan is an exciting prospect and the kind of talent you want to see coming through at your club. He is a bright young man, he has a sensible head on his shoulders and if he continues to make the kind of progress we have seen this season, I am sure that he has a great future ahead of him."
It remains to be seen whether he will keep his starting place for the remainder of the season but Watmore seems pragmatic about the situation he finds himself in. The former Altrincham player said:
"I'm delighted to sign my new deal and commit my future to Sunderland. I've had a great few years here developing my game and now I hope to push on further, with the help of the staff, my team-mates and the supporters, who have all been fantastic with me."
With his desire, drive and boundless enthusiasm Watmore has certainly ingratiated himself with the supporters and a new long term contract sees that commitment rewarded. Here's hoping there are far bigger and better things to come for the lad.
