Costel Pantilimon – 4
Seemingly unable to catch and hold onto the ball. Didn’t look comfortable at all this afternoon and parried a long range shot straight to Payet.
DeAndre Yedlin– 6
For his first Premier League game he did well. He was just caught out of position for West Ham’s first goal leaving the already booked Cattermole to deal with Moses.
Billy Jones – 6
He looked a lot better on the left side of defence today and generally it was a solid performance from Jones both defensively and in attack
John O’Shea– 7
Both centre backs did well today especially when Lens was sent off as West Ham had very little joy down the middle.
Seb Coates – 7
Very much like O’Shea he did well but a lack of concentration by not following up Pantilimon’s parry led to West Ham’s equaliser. But for the remaining half hour he and O’Shea were instrumental in hanging on for a point
Yann M’Vila – 8
M’Vila looked a class above anything on the pitch today. He controlled the midfield throughout the first half and had two assists.
Lee Cattermole – 7
Got booked early on for his first challenge which probably held him back but overall this performance from Cattermole signals he’s back on form.
Ola Toivonen – 7
His link up play with M’Vila and Borini looks promising and with an improvement in fitness he’ll hopefully be a big asset this season.
Jeremain Lens – 5
Lens spoilt what was looking like a great day by needlessly getting sent off for two rash challenges in unthreatening areas of the pitch. His goal was sublime but his sending off stupid and probably cost Sunderland the game.
Fabio Borini – 7
Borini put in a great shift and he deserved a goal or even two. He ultimately had the best chance to put the game to bed when he shot wide at 2-0 where he should have scored.
Steven Fletcher – 7
A surprise start for Fletcher but he took his chance today with a great goal to open the scoring and generally he looked energetic and linked up well with the midfield.
Jack Rodwell – 6 (sub)
Rodwell came on to tighten things up in midfield after the sending off and he did his job well.
Seb Larsson – 6 (sub)
Much the same as Rodwell, Larsson was brought on as another engine in midfield and he also played his part in keeping West Ham out.
Jordi Gomez – 5 (sub)
Literally no time to do anything.
Man Of The Match – Yann M’Vila
