Gus Poyet springs a couple of surprises as he gives Jermain Defoe his Sunderland debut and switches to a 3-5-2 formation.
Defoe starts up front with the returning Steven Fletcher, with Santiago Vergini, John O'Shea and Wes Brown making up the back three. Billy Jones also comes in and plays at wing back with Patrick van Aanholt, while Adam Johnson plays as an attacking central midfielder. Jack Rodwell replaces the suspended Liam Bridcutt.
