Prolific Brazilian international forward Jonas Goncalves Oliveira has rescinded his contract agreement with Valencia in an effort to embark upon a new adventure in the English Premier League and Sunderland are one of the clubs said to have received a phone call from agent Tiago Goncalves regarding his client's intention to come to these shores.
Clubs all over Europe are reportedly interested in securing the 30-year-old's signature, including Benfica and a long list of English Premier League sides. As for Sunderland, at this stage it's only a tentative proposal that may not come to fruition, but Gus Poyet would have to seriously consider adding Jonas to his squad should the Brazilian indicate any preference to ply his trade at the Stadium of Light.
The eight times-capped star has a proud goalscoring record from his spells in both Brazil and Spain, with an impressive 40 goals in 74 appearances in a Gremio shirt followed up with another 35 in 102 La Liga run-outs for Valencia. Former club Gremio are said to be looking at the possibility of bringing their hero back home, but they should prepare themselves for disappointment as Jonas has set his heart on grabbing an opportunity in England.
Jonas began his career with Guarani, moving on to Santos and then Gremio, while also spending a short time on loan with Portuguesa. He switched to Europe with Valencia in 2011, reaching double figures on the score-sheet in each of the last three seasons.
He is said to be looking for a long-term deal and will undoubtedly go where that offer eventually materialises. It'll be interesting to see if Sunderland seriously throw their hat into the ring for a player who has guaranteed goals wherever he has been so far.
