He had been described as a 'priority target' for Gus Poyet and Lee Congerton but after weeks of speculation, which included rumours of a £4m bid from Sunderland being rejected by Swansea, Ashley Williams has put pen to paper on a new four-year contract at the Liberty Stadium.
The 29-year-old said he was relaxed about the rumours surrounding his future because he knew he wanted to stay at Swansea;
I'm delighted to have signed.
There has always been a lot of talk and it seems to happen with me every summer.
But I have been very relaxed about it because I knew I wanted to be here.
I've enjoyed fantastic success at this club and I want to keep helping Swansea City progress.
You can only tip your hat to Williams' agent Jaime Moralee, who did a heck of a job for his client.
With John O'Shea and Wes Brown both entering the final year of their contract and neither getting any younger and as Williams is no longer an option Sunderland will have to look elsewhere as they seek to bolster the centre of their defence. Former loanee Santiago Vergini is likely to remain a target for Poyet and the club have been credited with an interest in Chelsea's French defender Kurt Zouma.
