Italians Hoping To Sign Sunderland Midfielder

Napoli are interested in signing Sunderland's Swedish midfielder Seb Larsson on a free transfer.

Seb Larsson is one of the many players due to leave Sunderland in the near future, whether they be out of contract or at the end of their loan spell, but he's also reported to be one of the few who Gus Poyet is hoping to keep at the club.

Those hopes may have become more difficult with the news out of Italy that Rafa Benitez has specifically requested that Napoli try to sign the Swedish international. According to the report in respected Italian newspaper 'Il Sussidiario', the Spanish manager wants to add Larsson to his squad as a cost-effective way of adding some versatility to his squad.

Should Napoli follow up in their interest in the 28-year-old, they are sure to be an attractive option for Larsson with the Naples-based side currently 3rd in Serie A and guaranteed Champions League football once again next season.

The Italians' interest should prove a test for Lee Congerton's negotiating skills, as Poyet hopes to keep Larsson at the club before his contract expires in little over a month.
