Despite impressing when coming off the bench of late, Emanuele Giaccherini has not been playing as much as he would have liked in a World Cup year, despite his lack of playing time, Gus Poyet has no knowledge of a potential transfer for the diminutive Italian.
Speaking to TuttoMercatoWeb about rumours linking Giaccherini with a return to Serie A with Genoa, Poyet dismissed those suggestions, saying;
I do not know what we are talking about, I know nothing about this.
Giaccherini has a contract with Sunderland
When asked if the Italian international would still be at the Stadium of Light next season, Poyet replied;
Why not?
Although Giaccherini has struggled to adapt to the Premier League this season, he has shown his quality at times. Particularly in the last couple of weeks when his appearances off the bench led to the comeback against Manchester City and Sunderland doubling their goal tally against Cardiff City. With the Italian having a direct hand in four goals in those two games, notching one goal and setting up three others (all scored by Connor Wickham).
If we complete the great escape and retain our Premier League status, Giaccherini could well be a pivotal player next season after having a full season to adapt to English top flight, particularly if are unable to make Fabio Borini's loan move permanent.
