The Capital One Cup final started well enough for Sunderland with Phil Bardsley setting the tone with a robust but fair tackle on Manchester City's David Silva:
Fabio Borini then gave Sunderland the lead after he brushed off Vincent Kompany and fired expertly past Costel Pantilimon:
Which of course led to his customary celebration:
Borini almost doubled Sunderland's lead when he was clean through on goal but a superb last ditch tackle by Kompany denied the Italian:
Yaya Toure equalised 10 minutes into the second half with a superb strike from distance:
One minute later City took the lead when Samir Nasri showed world class technique to give Vito Mannone no chance:
Steven Fletcher had a chance late on but lost control of the ball as he tried to get it onto his left foot when he really should have shot or squared the ball with his right:
City punished Fletcher's missed opportunity shortly afterwards when Navas fired home after a quick counter attack:
The final word should go to our fans though, who were simply superb from the night before when they took over London until well after the final whistle when they were applauding both teams and are seen here celebrating Sunderland's first goal in a major final since Ian Porterfield's in 1973:
