West Ham came to town on this day in 2001 in what turned out to be a tight game settled by a late strike from the awesome Kevin Phillips at the Stadium of Light.

Jason McAtter was injured just over quarter-of-an-hour into the match, with young Irishman Thomas Butler coming on in his place.

The scores were level at half-time, but the visitors piled on the pressure at the start of the second period with shots coming in from Joe Cole and Jermain Defoe.

However, both were denied by Dane Thomas Sorensen in the home goal, while deadly marksman Phillips almost struck at the other end with a free-kick.

With time ticking away at the end of the contest, Julio Arca crossed into the box for 'Super Kev' to nod home and hand all three points to the hosts with moments to spare.

Sunderland's line-up that day: Sorensen, Haas, Thome, Williams, Gray, McAtter (sub Butler 18'), McCann, Thirlwell, Arca, Quinn (sub Laslandes 57'), Phillips.
