Sunderland hope to appoint Everton talent-spotter Danny Philpott to their Academy of Light set-up.

Philpott has enjoyed success as head of national and international recruitment for the Toffees and will begin working alongside academy manager Ged McNamee shortly.

Lille will decide next month whether to pursue their interest in out-of-favour Sunderland striker Jozy Altidore.

A permanent transfer to the French Ligue 1 club Lille could be in the offing should the Black Cats manage to recoup the bulk of a reported £7million fee paid out to AZ Alkmaar for Altidore's services in the summer of 2013.

The Chronicle

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has challenged midfielder Jack Rodwell to fight for his starting place.

Gus Poyet has thrown down the gauntlet to £10million summer signing Jack Rodwell in an effort to see him putting pressure on replacement Jordi Gomez in the starting line-up.

Poyet also says he wants to see goals for his midfield players and Rodwell is no exception.

Gus Poyet suggests he has a clear idea of his transfer targets ahead of the upcoming winter transfer window.

The rumour mill is in full swing already and Black Cats boss Poyet says he knows exactly which positions he wishes to strengthen and the local newspapers speculate he'll be looking to add a centre-half, left full-back and left-sided forward in the mould of Fabio Borini (yes, him again!).
