Lady Black Cats Seal WS2 Title

Not all Sunderland football teams are rubbish. The Lasses are the Champs!

Sunderland AFC Ladies have been promoted to England's top tier as Champions after winning the FA Women's Super League 2 title in London.

The Lady Black Cats secured the title on the final day of their maiden season in the WSL by beating Millwall Lionesses 4-0 at the New Den, putting them out of reach of second-placed Doncaster Rovers Belles.

Sunderland will now compete with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea in FA WSL 1 during the 2015 season.

The Wearsiders lifted the trophy after winning 15 of their 18 league games, scoring an impressive 47goals in 18 games, while conceding just 15.

SAFC Ladies head coach Claire Robinson said:

We are delighted to have won the FA WSL2 league title at the first attempt. The players and staff have worked hard in training and matches for over a year to make this dream a reality and we could not be happier.

We will take some time to enjoy this moment before the hard work starts all over again as we look to make the next step up to FA Women's Super League 1.

The league win is the Ladies' fourth in as many seasons, having won three consecutive FA Women's Premier League titles prior to obtaining their Women's Super League license earlier this year.

SAFC Ladies team manager Mick Mulhern said:

To achieve promotion in our first season at this level is brilliant and as a club we are all delighted to finally achieve our goal of being able to play in FA WSL1.

The staff and players have worked tirelessly and deserve the opportunity to compete at the highest level. We know it will be extremely tough but it's a very exciting opportunity for everyone and we will relish the challenge.

We'd like to say a big congratulations to the Ladies team from all at Roker Report. They're seriously putting the lads to shame right now!
