After Gus Poyet confirmed French defenders Modibo Diakite and Valentin Roberge may leave Sunderland during this window, the player Poyet said was most likely to leave has a new suitor.
According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Fiorentina are looking for a bargain move for a central defender during January and Diakite, as well as Napoli's Paolo Cannavaro, are the two most likely options for the Viola. Cannavaro is looking for an 18 month contract however and Vincenzo Montella's side are considering a loan move for Diakite, with an option to buy at the end of the season.
If it went ahead, it would be the second transfer between the clubs in this window, after Marcos Alonso arrived on a loan deal from Fiorentina at the end of December.
Diakite's Bosman move to Sunderland hasn't really worked out, hit by niggling injuries during pre-season, he was unable to make a mark on the side when he finally got a chance in the team. Although impressing in the game at Everton, where he kept Romelu Lukaku quiet, he struggled in his next game against Cardiff and the form of John O'Shea and Wes Brown, as well as the arrival of Santiago Vergini, are likely to restrict his chances further.
