With Santiago Vergini expected on Wearside imminently to wrap up a move to Sunderland, could he be replacing one of our summer signings in the centre of defence?
According to calciomercato.it, French defender Modibo Diakite is a target for Serie A side Genoa. The report claims the two clubs have discussed the possibility of the player joining on loan and are awaiting the player's approval before going ahead with the move. With developments possible in the coming days or even hours.
Genoa have already signed Cabral on loan from Sunderland, who made his debut at the weekend in a 4-0 defeat by Roma, and Sunderland have recently been linked with Genoa's back-up goalkeeper Albano Bizzarri.
Diakite has struggled for form, fitness and playing time since his move to Sunderland and with John O'Shea and Wes Brown looking solid at the back, as well as Vergini's impending arrival, he is unlikely to feature much for the remainder of the season.
