Gustavo Poyet has spoken out that there is an opportunity for him at Sunderland, with further reports that he's desperate to take the role.
Speaking in today's press Poyet said;
My opportunity to manage Sunderland is there. I'm waiting. Nervously.
Since the start of the season, I've dedicated myself to watching the games of teams that might call me if things weren't going too well.
As we reported yesterday, an informal meeting in London was held whilst Kevin Ball's side were at the Stadium Of Light beating Peterborough United. Poyet is said to be desperate to manage the club and prove his worth in the Premier League.
It's understood that things went well between Poyet and the Sunderland board, and he's the contender to beat, although other names will be sounded out including former Manchester United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen and Basel boss Murat Yakin before any decision is made.
Poyet was a firm favourite of the Sunderland board prior to Paolo Di Canio taking over, but he didn't want, at the time, to leave Brighton. Now with him out of work the opportunity is there, and is his for the losing at the moment.
